  • Dozens killed in Egyptian blasts

At least 83 people have been killed and scores more wounded in bomb attacks in the Egyptian resort of Sharm al-Sheikh.

An explosion in the Old Market area was followed by two blasts in the Naama Bay area, where a car bomb tore off the front of the Ghazala Gardens Hotel.

Most of the dead are Egyptians, although foreign nationals are among the victims, officials said.

The attack - the worst in Egypt in recent history - comes months after 34 people died in an attack in Sinai.

In a statement posted on an Islamic website, a group calling itself the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, al-Qaeda, in Syria and Egypt, said it carried out the bombings, the Associated Press news agency reported, although the claim has not been verified.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has cut short his vacation to visit the scene of the attacks, which happened on a national holiday marking the 1952 Egyptian Revolution.

        Nothing directly.

However, Egypt is taken to be closest to the US and have "played ball" in matters that is taken as weaking the Arab solidarity. Therefore, I presume, it is given as a warning.

Also, the Moslem Brotherhood are not being allowed to stand for elections as per the last I heard. Moslem Brotherhood is a fundamentalist organisation and hence Egypt is correct in keeping them off the scene.

Lastly, what is better than knocking off a few western tourists so that the tourist industry that rakes in the foreign exchange is kept away and Egypt forced to contend with its Arab neighbours goodwill to carry on their activities.

        Just a thought.

They're active in trying to produce a Palistinian state. Such a state will damage one of the excuses the terrorist leaders have to increase their wealth and power.

Man thats something I find proposterous. I've seen every appologist complain that the "west" values its own people's lives a lot more than ours, so it doesn't matter how many of ours die as collateral.

I'm not too sure, but in all probability, a lot more egyptians died than tourists. Or at least their intended 'infidel' tourists. They themselves don't value their own people's lives as much as they value the foreigners. A 100 locals can die, if it means the death of at least one foreigner to quench their hate. Pathetic.

Its shocking to know this scourge has reached Egypt as well. Most of them are quite educated. I had a .net trainer who was egyptian, and he was younger than me.

They're active in trying to produce a Palistinian state.
            Sigh... yeah... Palestine/Israel... blukh!

Remember the Muslim scholars that told Zarqawi he was justified in killing Muslims if they were trying really hard to kill infidels - even if they missed 'em, and just killed The Faithful. Gave him permission, in essence, to blow up a stadium full of Muslims if he was trying to kill the Christian referee or the Jewish umpire.

Pardon the pun, but JESUS CHRIST! Even their holy men say it's okay to kill their own if the attackers' black hearts were in the right place. Effort counts more than results, I guess, and Allah will forgive you as long as you tried to kill the people he hates.

How are the rest of us supposed to view this religion of Islam when we hear things like this FROM THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE DEVOTED A LIFETIME OF STUDY TO ITS PRECEPTS?

These Muslims scholars will run the entire Islamic Ummah down the drain man. Who cares what Zarqawi or some Mullah beeb says, we have our own freewill to do as we think is right.

The Muslim Brotherhood was fairly active in Egypt in the 1990s as I recall. Also targeting tourists.

Musharraf rejects direct Pakistan Al-Qaeda links to Egypt blasts

Musharraf rejects direct Pakistan Al-Qaeda link to Egypt blasts

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - President Pervez Musharraf said Al-Qaeda had been dismembered in Pakistan and could not have directed the bomb blasts in Egypt and London from his country.

Under pressure after British and Egyptian police have pointed to Pakistani links to deadly bomb attacks in London and the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Musharraf said Al-Qaeda was now a global "phenomenon".

He rejected as "absolutely and totally baseless" suggestions the network founded by Osama bin Laden had its headquarters in Pakistan and said its communications structure had been broken.

"So in this situation, is it possible that an Al-Qaeda man sitting here is controlling events in London or Sharm el-Sheikh or other parts of the world?" he said, speaking to journalists in the eastern city of Lahore.

                          "This is absolutely wrong."

He added that "the world must understand that this Al-Qaeda has become a phenomenon" and said it had become "a state of mind" that could not be defeated by military means alone.

Musharraf has been under pressure to step up the fight against extremists after the July 7 London bombings and ordered his security apparatus to round up hundreds of suspected extremists, triggering protests at home.

Adding to the pressure, Egyptian police Monday said they were searching for six Pakistani suspects in connection with Saturday's attacks that killed at least 88 people.

In the manhunt, police exchanged fire with Bedouin gunmen who were believed to be hiding the suspects in the mountainous interior of Egypt's Sinai peninsula.

"Two Pakistanis had been staying there, and it is suspected that the bombs were assembled in this area," an Egyptian intelligence source said.

Pictures of the suspects, who were believed to have entered Egypt in early July, had been distributed to police stations, police said. Their passports had been found in an unspecified Sharm el-Sheikh hotel.

In his comments Monday Musharraf, wearing his general's uniform, said that Pakistan in past operations had dismantled Al-Qaeda's command and control system and captured more than 700 members.

"Wherever we find them, we attack them -- their vertical and horizontal linkages have been broken and there is no homogeneity in them," he said.

"It has no command structure originating from Pakistan and conveying messages to the whole world to do this act and do that act under total coordination of some commander."

He added: "It is a phenomenon where everyone has started calling himself Al-Qaeda, whether he has done it in London or Sharm el-Sheikh."

"Now we have to deal with this phenomenon, and a phenomenon is a state of mind. It is in the mind of people. So, to deal with the phenomenon, you have to change states of mind.

He added that "the whole world has to act to resolve political disputes and social issues. The sooner it is understood, the better for the entire world."

Musharraf, who has been targeted for assassination for his pro-Western stance, has come under increasing pressure from Britain and the United States to crack down hard on Islamic militants since the London bombings.

Three of the four July 7 London bombers who killed 52 people were British citizens of Pakistani descent, and several of them had visited the country of their parents months before the attacks.

Musharraf has launched nationwide raids against mosques and Islamic schools in a bid to uproot clerics preaching anti-Western hatred.

Police have also enforced bans on mosque loudspeakers being used for clerics' speeches and on printed material and audio recordings of mullahs calling for holy war against the West
