Not likely. I figure they're heading back to the barn up in Wisconsin to get rebuilt or something. A friend pointed out their desert paint, so hopefully they were down in Texas or something getting put through their paces.

He was an utterly incapable, unadapted, irresponsible, psychopathic personality, full of empty, infantile fantasies, but cursed with the keen intuition of a rat or a guttersnipe. He represented the shadow, the inferior part of everybody’s personality, in an overwhelming degree, and this was another reason why they fell for him.”

My parents just don't seem to give a hoot.
For people who are over 70, they have seen so much shit in life, there's nothing a virus can do to them. This is what my mum thinks. It's very troubling to make aged parents understand the risk of communicable diseases, particularly one that is new and not well understood, and how at their age their immunity won't work the way it used to.

Trump seems to agree. Take away the corporate added names like choloro and hydroxy and you are left with plain old quinine, for malaria : )

My dads 70, my mums 69. They haven't seen that much shit in life?
They talk like they were the first people on the beach at Normandy...

They are driving me to despair. How hard is it to sit at home and watch netflix for three months?

Lol, hahahaha, I wish I could argue like you.

Yes, this part I don't understand. They act like kids. My home is like a fish market most of the day. There is no quiet place for me to sit with my laptop.

Don't see this every day up there, that's for damn sure.
There seem to be a lot of cancelled joint exercises, so perhaps those might be headed back to the barn.

USNI reported yesterday that, "The Pentagon has also started to cancel exercises across the world. The massive European ground exercise Defender Europe has been shelved. U.S. Africa Command also canceled exercises African Lion, the Mediterranean Sea-based Phoenix Express and Obangame Express. The planning for the massive biennial Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2020 is underway using video teleconferences and other technology that keep leaders safely apart, USNI News has learned."

We obviously will try VERY hard for this one, but we've been trying on MERS and SARS for quite a while and have not succeeded on either: the vaccine being tested for COVID-19 in Seattle right now was originally designed for MERS. There's a good chance none of these are going to work. There's also a chance that there will be negative side effects that are really nasty.

Also, just because you get a sickness does NOT mean you cannot get it again. The adaptive immune system sometimes has an inadequate response to future exposures, and you might just lose the anti-bodies regardless. A twitter thread I read about this issue suggested humans infected with a DIFFERENT coronavirus strain still were susceptible to contagion a year later. 1/3 of those challenged with the same strain got the illness again.

Normally that wouldn't be a huge deal, but there's a major possibility with THIS disease that extremely small exposures can result in massive problems for the healthcare system. It basically means permanent vigilance otherwise this thing will take hold again.

We just don't know how this disease will operate yet.

Also, 3 coronaviruses have species-jumped in the last 20 years. There are reservoirs of other coronaviruses that might jump and cause this impact again. A vaccine isn't a solution to that, we need to adapt our behavior and our institutions so we can respond more quickly next time.
The actual name for this current virus is SARS-CoV-2 and China has shared the RNA sequence. The actual process to create a vaccine actually does take a long time and really can't be fast tracked. No one location has the facilities to produce a vaccine. Rather many institutions need to work on the vaccine and generally take 2-5 years. First how the virus works needs to be understood. To do that you need to create an animal model. Then test vaccines to see that they can trigger the correct parts of our immune system without causing damage at the same time. That means pre-clinical testing on animals. Pass that they then can move onto human clinical testing. Once proven that the vaccine works, and is SAFE, then it can move to approval and manufacturing. Of course the virus could mutate, change proteins in it's coat, and then get a second chance.

As I said before, as opposed to a comment here, is that if man keeps moving into areas where man has never occupied before we will see more of this. Examples would be regions in Africa and South America particularly Brazil where man is moving deeper into the Amazon for lumber, minerals, and farm land. Who knows what is lurking at that interface. The global economy and global connections simply means the virus can move around the world easily and quickly now as compared to the 60s when it would have been quite limited.

                • We are expecting a state-wide lockdown order in IL tomorrow or Saturday. However, the IL National Guard said on the good ol' Facebook that those are not their vehicles and they haven't moved anything recently. A few have been called up to basically operate a drive-through test station, and that's about it.

                  • Well, the California government has issued a "stay-at-home" order, whatever the hell that means.

I don't know if I'm considered essential or not. I'm currently working as a contractor doing data migrations for a company that manufactures N95 masks and other medical protective equipment, so their office employees can work from home.

Because we are not sitting around waiting to die.

Not in the slightest. My 78 year old mother is doing a fair job of self isolating.

She has a pre-existing respiratory condition & quite reasonably suspects that if she catches this it might end very badly. She is limiting personal contact to the point where I did some shopping for her today & then she drove to my place & I popped it in the car while she was parked in the street. This is from someone for whom a hug & kiss is mandatory upon greeting. She is talking about doing this for 6 months if necessary, though I'm not sure how that will go once she is a couple of months in.

Mum has 5 grandchildren, the eldest of whom is getting married next year. She plans to be there & at weddings for all the rest too.

                        • MIL: Serious. Cancelled baby-sitting. Fine by me.
FIL: Thinks it is just the flu. Not allowed to work from home, even though all his work is already remote (he helps factories on other continents resolve SAP issues). Annoyed because international travel bans make it impossible for him to go out.
Mom: Serious. Annoyed she is being required to go into work. She does the same thing as me (factory finance). She shuts the door and does not let anyone talk to her.
                          Dad: Resigned. Works retail.

Me: Most every patient has cancelled on their own. Only three left for all of next week and so far are positive they will come in. We will see. I am the only person in the office now.
Wife: Supplies care in a nursing home (M,W,F and Sun 1500-2300 hours) up the street from my office and in home care for 3 hours every M,W,and F morning. She just left.
Son: School cancelled till April 7th although Governor has said he might cancel the rest of the remaining year. Oh, fun......

                            • They have 'locked down' Ukraine I am told. Even if I could get home (which I probably could via Romania) and my two weeks self quarantine I could not get a train or a flight to Kyiv to go back to work.

Our factory considers itself critical, so, still going to work! People are pretty peeved. We are not actually critical.
Wife works in a hospital. Wife specifically works in a hospital that sounds like it is getting geared up specifically to handle COVID. Given the sheer amount of PPE shortage, I am a bit concerned.

Baby gets put in Day Care with a bunch of other babies. This Day Care is considered critical because it's right next to a hospital that is almost definitely a center for COVID. Good times.

Reallllly hope this gets under control.
