  • Under the new rules, foreign semiconductor makers who use American technology must obtain a U.S. license to ship Huawei-designed semiconductors to the Chinese company.
    This is going to affect Huawei's new product lines for laptops, phones and wider telecoms infrastructure. It appears hardware only for now.

    These are just squeezing tactics until USG can get what they want out of the trade deal.

    What it is doing is increasing the risk for others to interact with Huawei. That's the hit to Huawei.

    I'm trying to think what drove companies to think of moving out of China.

    3M is an American company that makes N95 masks. They make a lot of them. In China.

    What did China do. Banned them from exporting. So no PPE could be exported because China wanted first dibs.

    That is the sort of state intervention that makes companies nervous.

              Do you have anything to add to this topic or not ? this thread is perfectly fine where it is and is on topic.

              Go introduce yourself in the intro thread so we know where you're from and what you're into.

                It's a developing story, however now i'm wondering what the earlier spat with Australia was about.

                Confirming the development, official sources told TOI the motion was likely to be adopted unanimously. “It has language that was acceptable to all including EU and Australia and wasn’t objected to by either China or the US,” said a source. US and China though had not yet joined the group of 62 nations which have declared support for the motion.

                India, which will take over as the chair of the WHO executive board on Monday, has so far avoided lending support to any demand to put China in the dock for the origin of the novel coronavirus. The EU resolution too does not name China or Wuhan and is backed by China’s ally Russia.
                Even Russia supports this EU resolution.

                What comes out of it depends on China and the consequences for non-cooperation.

                  • HAHA! the Aussies must be pissing themselves now : D

                    Yeah, THE boss with the threats ended up doing a U-turn in double quick time.

                    I keep asking who is leading these fools.

                    As per WHO's assessment, "the Director General will ask at an appropriate time after consultations with the member states and gradually initiate an independent and through process to review the lessons learnt in the WHO coordination and propose suggestions for future work," Zhao said.

                    "In the consultations, the vast majority of the countries believe that the pandemic is not over yet and cooperation to fight against is the most urgent task at the moment so it is not mature to start immediately the assessment", Zhao said.
                    It's going to take a while for something to come out of this..

                        China's 'token' $2 bn payment to WHO is a distraction to hide failure: US | Business Standard | May 19 2020

                        Earlier, China announced that it would provide more than $2 billion over two years to the WHO to fight the pandemic

                        The US government sees China's newly announced payment to the World Health Organization (WHO) as an attempt to distract from Beijing's failure in handling the Covid-19 outbreak, White House National Security Council spokesman John Ullyot said in a statement on Monday.

                        Earlier, China announced that it would provide more than $2 billion over two years to the WHO to fight the pandemic.

                        "The CCP [Chinese Communist Party]'s payment of $2 billion is a token to distract from the growing number of nations demanding accountability for the Chinese government's failure to meet its obligations under International Health Regulations to tell the truth and warn the world what was coming," Ullyot said.

                        President Donald Trump has suspended US payments to the WHO pending a review of how the organization handled the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. China has said it released information about the virus in a timely manner. The WHO said its emergency declaration gave countries plenty of time to prepare.

                          Australia prepares to take China to the World Trade Organisation | SMH | May 19 2020

                          China wants to impose tarriffs on Aussie barley.

                          Australia has submitted more than 10,000 pages of evidence to China in relation to the dispute.

                          China argues Australian barley farmers are subsidised - including through drought relief - giving them an unfair advantage against China's local producers by allowing them to dump cheaper barley into the market.

                          Australian trade negotiators have rejected the allegations and will argue Australian barley farmers operate on commercial terms.
                          That is the crux of China's argument.

                          Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said earlier on Tuesday that Australia would "probably" go to the WTO to make a determination as an independent umpire.

                          Mr Littleproud said Australia should be proud of its push for a global coronavirus investigation.

                          "The fact that Australia led the way and asked ... for that review to take place, we should be damn proud as a nation that we led the world in not only on understanding what the WHO has done, but understanding what wildlife wet markets' role is in these pandemics," he said.
                          Damn straight !

                          • 30 days notice for the Wuhan Health Organisation.

                            Donald Trump puts WHO’s Tedros on notice over Covid-19, says might exit WHO | HT | May 19 2020

                            US President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to walk out of the World Health Organisation, accusing the Tedros Adhanom-led global health body chief of acting at China’s behest and mismanaging the Covid-19 pandemic in the early stages.

                            “It is clear the repeated missteps by you and your organization in responding to the pandemic have been extremely costly for the world. The only way forward for the World Health Organization is if it can actually demonstrate independence from China,” Trump said in a letter to Tedros Adhanom.

                            In his four-page letter, Trump detailed every occasion since December last when, according to the US, the WHO did not act on the available information, made misleading claims or gave the world bad advice.

                            Trump gave Tedros Adhanom 30 days to commit to major substantive improvements, warning that if the WHO doesn’t deliver on this, “I will make my temporary freeze of United States funding to the WHO permanent and reconsider our membership”.
                            If the WHO is going to investigate how this virus came about it makes sense that the crime scene isn't investigated with the criminal.

                            Good interview with Savi who got to talk to the WHO. He had three questions.

                            WHO said there is a PHEIC (Public health emergency of international concern) on Jan 30.

                            According to IHR rules, the PHEIC is the highest level of emergency. There is no classification for pandemic in the IHR rules.

                            Did any country act soon after Jan 30 ? No!

                            When the WHO says pandemic on Mar 11, we see the lockdowns sweeping the world shortly thereafter.

                            So the world govts understood pandemic but not PHEIC. A major communications gap.

                            When queried further on this, Tedros said the WHO gave the world enough time to act.

                            In effect the world lost six crucial weeks in which to act.

                            The WHO's primary responsibility is to detect and prevent health crises. They clearly failed their mission here.

                            • Tedros & the CPC are sitting over the dead bodies of 100s of 1000s, apart from wrecking the global economy. Let America take care of the CPC, this Chinese lackey Tedros should be injected with a high viral load of Covid-19 and thrown into a cell with no medical facilities. Disgusting how leftist trolls continue to defend these malicious duo.

                              • I thought it would be a good idea to actually read this resolution that caused so much heat.

                                China isn't named anywhere. And its quite anodyne.

                                Here is the part about getting to the bottom of this virus

                                OP9.6 Continue to work closely with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and countries, as part of the One-Health Approach to

                                - identify the zoonotic source of the virus and
                                - the route of introduction to the human population,
                                - including the possible role of intermediate hosts,
                                - including through efforts such as scientific and collaborative field missions, which will enable targeted interventions and a research agenda to reduce the risk of similar events
                                - as well as to provide guidance on how to prevent SARS-COV2 infection in animals and humans and
                                - prevent the establishment of new zoonotic reservoirs,
                                - as well as to reduce further risks of emergence and transmission of zoonotic diseases;
                                OP9.10 Initiate, at the earliest appropriate moment, and in consultation with Member States,

                                - a stepwise process of impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation, including using
                                existing mechanisms,
                                - as appropriate, to review experience gained and lessons learned from the WHO-coordinated international health response to COVID-19, including
                                (i) the effectiveness of the mechanisms at WHO’s disposal;
                                (ii) the functioning of the IHR and the status of implementation of the relevant recommendations of the previous IHR Review Committees;
                                (iii) WHO’s contribution to United Nations-wide efforts; and
                                (iv) the actions of WHO and their timelines pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic, and

                                - make recommendations to improve global pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response capacity, including through strengthening, as appropriate, WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme;
                                all this by

                                OP9.11 Report to the Seventy-fourth World Health Assembly, through the 148th session of the Executive Board, on the implementation of this resolution.
                                Not sure when that happens ?
