I presume this was in reaction to the attack on the US embassy in Baghdad.

Qasem Soleimani: US kills Iran Quds force leader, Pentagon confirms

General Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' elite Quds Force, has been killed by US forces in Iraq.

The Pentagon confirmed he was killed "at the direction of the president".

It comes after reports of a strike at Baghdad's international airport, which is said to have killed a number of people.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards also confirmed Gen Soleimani was dead, blaming an attack by US helicopters.

They also said Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis had been killed.

"At the direction of the President, the US military has taken decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani," a Pentagon statement said.

"This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans. The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world."

Reports also suggest that a number of Iraq militia heads have been detained by US forces in Baghdad, although this is unconfirmed.

The strike comes days after protesters surrounded the US embassy in Baghdad, clashing with US forces at the scene.

US defence secretary Mark Esper said late on Thursday that the US would not accept attacks against its personnel in the region, blaming Iran for the violence at the embassy.

"Attacks against us will be met with responses in the time, manner, and place of our choosing," a statement read. "We urge the Iranian regime to end their malign activities."
"Every man has his weakness. Mine was always just cigarettes."

Well now, Trump did something right. Well done Mr. President.
“He was the most prodigious personification of all human inferiorities. He was an utterly incapable, unadapted, irresponsible, psychopathic personality, full of empty, infantile fantasies, but cursed with the keen intuition of a rat or a guttersnipe. He represented the shadow, the inferior part of everybody’s personality, in an overwhelming degree, and this was another reason why they fell for him.”

Madness. At the least this will close the straights.

Possible, yes. And could even lead to war with Iran.

On the other hand, I can't say I'm sorry that Iran is finally seeing some kinetic blowback to their adventuresome meddling in Iraq.

If attempted, there will be some smoldering fiberglass adrift.

That will by necessity involve airstrikes on Iranian harbours, which is Iranian territory. It will also involve missile strikes on both fixed and mobile missile sites, not just coastal ones but far inland.

The US also got the SOB that orchestrated the attack on the US Embassy in Beirut in 1983!

It was a brilliant airstrike, it cleaned up a whole lot of filth. They've also made major arrests through Baghdad of the various Iranian militiaapparently. The problem is, what happens next....

Couldn't agree more, just be prepared for things to escalate quickly. While it would be nice if they did, Iran is unlikely to take this lying down.

Do they respond only against the US? Or does a response include against Israel and/or the Saudis etc.

Decisive. This has been an ongoing problem for at least a decade.

I've argued with Dreadnought if the Iranians wanted to do more they could and these were just tactical attacks.

That was over five years ago.

At some point the president has to weigh pros & cons and losses & future risks to US personnel.

                        Quds force leader. Wow.

Relieved you did not refer to this as a tail wag the dog moment ; )

Maybe that was the final straw but the context is nearly a decade of your guys being targeted in the region (primarily in Iraq) by Quds. Not explicitly as in they go looking for it but should US forces get in the way of Iran's plans & designs for the region then they will engage with whoever.

A decision had to be made. Could not do it in Obama's term.

It comes at the end of Trump's term

I'm surprised they got the Quds leader. Because you'd think he'd be hard to find.

It means they could have got him sooner but did not. This shows restraint.

You think it was an unnecessary escalation by the Americans ?

Closing the Hormuz straits would be a further escalation.

No, i don't think Iran will do that in response.

Iran would have to be directly attacked for that and massively.

And that is not on the cards, ever was in the cards because the Saudis would get it in the neck shortly after.

In April 2019, the State Department announced Iran was responsible for killing 608 U.S. troops during the Iraq War. Soleimani was the head of the Iranian and Iranian-backed forces carrying out those operations killing American troops. According to the State Department, 17 percent of all deaths of U.S. personnel in Iraq from 2003 to 2011 were orchestrated by Soleimani.

Leb Hezbollah Imad Mugniyeh in 2008. CIA op. Twenty five years later.

Mughniyeh did more, captured the CIA station chief, held him hostage, tortured him and finally killed him.

In Dec 83, orchestrated the bombing of US barracks in Beirut killing over 200 personnel. With numbers like this i'm amazed there was no US response immediately and this is during Reagan's time. The contra affair was also happening on the side. So all rather confusing.

If Iran wanted the US forces out of Lebanon at the time it succeeded.

Then Iran did the same with the French and got them to remove their troops from Lebanon a well.
