    What's amazing is how Russia, Canada, Greenland and parts of Europe, shrink dramatically in comparison to pretty much everybody else.

    It is the projections, so perhaps the more closer object to the edge of the sphere, the more it looks like a line on a cylinder's side-surface which is wrapped around, and the opposite the more object closer to the center of equator (projection of the sphere's center) the more it's looks like it's actually look. South America in it's South part has small objects (country borders) and far more distance to the 'edge' then Greenland or the North of RF for an example, and the final count is determined by difference in squares of country, the projection area and the actual area.
