Going to try to do a Work in progress. The site seems to work better at times.

This is the Special Hobby 1/72 scale. Its an older kit. And my first Special Hobby kit. This is one of what use to be a short run kit. So definitely not a hasegawa/academy easy build

    On to the pics

I used to love doing this as a teen. Your mind just goes somewhere else as you imagine what those planes did. Getting the decals out of water and sticking them. Good times.

It really is relaxing. Plus I enjoy the history. I do research the models I build. But its more about the units and pilots that operated them and less about, "Panel 3B should have 7 rivets after June 1988, or That shade of gray is wrong for the time period.

Special Hobby, Had been warned about them. No alignment pins, soft "cheap toy" plastic. Parts warped, Instructions suck. Huge sprue gates

And all of that is true. This is definitely not a "First time" model.

Bring sharp knifes, plenty of clamps, sanding boards and super glue when all else fails.

But I'm beating this thing into submission.

First the cockpit. It was the easy part. And all painted in Aluminum

More filing and cutting to get the fuselage and wings together. Don't worry, I've got plenty of putty to fill those gaps. Sometimes its easier to "Go big" and fix it later than to inch your way into a perfect fit.

The Wife just came in, Checked out the thread and said If I'm going to post a pic of a plane with a "Fire spitting devil" I should at least show the "Fire spitting Devil"

                She has a point.

                  Ahhh, the Vibrator.

So ballsy of those Marine Aviators who flew them against the Japanese Fleet at Midway.

and putting the bombs together. The bomb swing arm is one of the distinct features of the vindicator. So gotta have bombs.

Does anyone know what color a High Explosive bomb was in the late 1930s?

The slow part. Painting. Especially with the weather we have been having the last few days.

First came the white primer on all the parts I'm painting yellow. And the cloth portions of the plane.

Then I shot both yellow colors Model Master Acryl Chrome Yellow on the wings. And since she is a Lex bird. Vallejo Model Air Lemon yellow on the tail

Then I covered the wings and sprayed Black Primer on the metal parts of the fuselage.

Trying to bring more contrast between the metal and cloth portions of the airplane using the 2 different primers. On the real planes the metal parts would have been painted silver and the cloth parts painted with an aluminum dope.
I'm going to use Alum and White alum but I'm hoping the different primers will give more contrast

I'm assuming you are talking bomb color.

That's what I thought also. But then I saw a color picture from 1941. And they weren't green.

                          So I went here

                          https://maritime.org/doc/ordnance/index.htm#toc

and learned that prior to March 11, 1942 US Army bombs HE bombs (called Demolition bombs) were Yellow with black markings.

Navy bombs of the same type were either Yellow with black Or Grey with yellow disk between the lugs.

Just goes to show, Jarheads can learn a thing or two even at an advanced age.

Also learned that we had cluster bombs back in WW2

Not much work this week. I did get the colors painted.

The LED lights don't show the difference between the Lemon Yellow tail and the Chrome Yellow wings. But it does show off the slight difference between the Chrome and the white aluminum of the fuselage.

I have finally beat this thing into submission. The canopy was a nightmare. To narrow, warped like a banana. But hot water lots of clamps and a little white glue to fill in the gaps between it and the fuselage and I called it "good enough".

Here she is finished as the VB-2, Squadron Commanders plane off the USS Lexington in 1939. Later in life LtCdr Harry D.Felt would lead Air group 3 (Saratoga) in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in the attack that sank the light carrier IJN Ruyjo.
After the war he became Commander in Chief of Pacific (CinCPac)

                              Final shots.
