FATAH: They should've called it the Christchurch-Colombo Call for Action

Oscar Wilde once said, “When good Americans die, they go to Paris.” Maybe that is the reason there were no Americans at last week’s Paris Summit hosted by President Emmanuel Macron of France and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand to “curb online extremism.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was there alongside Britain’s embattled Theresa May and other liberal politicians of Europe who signed on to what they called the “Christchurch Call to Action” to commemorate the killing of 51 Muslims in a massacre at two mosques in the New Zealand city on March 15.

The coming together of Western leaders within two months after the horrific hate fest was welcomed by one and all. But between March 15 in Christchurch and May 15 in Paris, there were other horrific acts of genocidal nature in Asia and Africa, that went completely unmentioned in the Paris document.

Representatives of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the UK all seemed to have etched ‘Christchurch’ on their minds, but could not recall the massacre a week later of over 250 Christians by Islamist terrorists in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Jordan’s British-born King Abdullah and ambassadors from Indonesia, India and Senegal joined their former European colonial masters in Paris, but they too didn’t utter a single word in solidarity with those who died in Colombo.

The question is, why didn’t prime ministers Macron and Ardern invite Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to the summit? With him at the table they could have named the summit the ‘Christchurch-Colombo Call for Action,’ but sadly they did not. As they say, it’s all about ‘location, location, location.’

The president of Nigeria too was conspicuous by his absence as was the leader of Burkina Faso, two countries where many more than the Christchurch 51 have died at the hands of terrorists.

Seems the narcissism of Ardern got in the way of her better judgment. It was irresponsible and hypocritical for the West’s leaders to demand that hatred be eradicated from the internet, but not from the minds of people ideologically driven towards supremacy, be it White or Islamic.

Here is a sample of hatred that does not require the internet and social media. It’s targeted at vulnerable Muslim youth, sowing the seeds of revulsion towards non-Muslims.

From a sermon at a Toronto mosque a few years ago: “O Allah! Count their number, slay them [non-Muslims] one by one and make them a lesson to their likenesses. Oh Allah, Defeat them and make the ground shake beneath their feet, and show us in them the wonders of your Might, for they are weak before You, O Mighty, O Powerful.”

Stateside, the recent uncovering of a video showing Muslim children chanting at a Philadelphia Islamic event was shocking. “We will chop off their heads, and we will liberate the sorrowful and exalted Al-Aqsa Mosque … We will subject them to eternal torture,” chanted the girls.

Elsewhere, earlier this year, Kuwaiti singer Monia Al-Hob told a public TV network that on Judgment day, “we will kill all the Jews,” adding that Jews will have a special gate to hell.

Its quite likely this new breed of ‘young and beautiful’ leaders in the West have had little time to read anything of substance. It may help them to read up on hate-based killing from before both the internet and electricity was born. Two examples of the pre-Facebook and Twitter era may help.

The 1971 genocide in Bangladesh by Pakistan and the 2002 genocide of Darfuris by the Arab Janjaweed. But unfortunately, they come with a Colombo stamp on them, not one made-in-Christchurch.

Sri Lanka mastermind’s call data trail leads to Tamil Nadu, Kerala

Intelligence agencies are tracking over a dozen men from Tamil Nadu and Kerala whose phone numbers were found in the Call Detail Records (CDRs) of Zaharan Hashim, the suspected mastermind behind the Easter Sunday blasts in Sri Lanka, a security official told The Indian Express.

Hashim is believed to have spent close to three months in India, possibly from late last year, and the CDRs pertain to this period and the months since his return to Lanka, the official said. Hashim was among the group of suicide bombers that targeted churches and hotels across Sri Lanka, killing over 250 people.

On Monday, as part of its probe into Hashim’s India links, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested one of the three men from Kerala, who were detained Sunday, on suspicion of being an Islamic State (IS) recruit and “for conspiring to commit a terrorist act”.

The agency identified the man arrested as Palakkad resident Riyas Abubakar alias Abu Dujana. “He has disclosed that he has been following speeches/videos of Zaharan Hashim… for more than a year and has also followed the speeches of (Islamic preacher) Zakir Naik. He admitted that he wanted to carry out a suicide attack in Kerala,” NIA IG Alok Mittal said.

Investigators, meanwhile, suspect that Hashim broke away from the Lanka-based National Thowheeth Jamaath, which has been blamed for the blasts, to form his own outfit recently.

“The group was named Nation of Thowheeth Jamaath, perhaps alluding to the idea of a Caliphate. He got around 35 young men to join him. The suspicion is that it is these people who carried out the attack,” a security official said. The NTJ had issued a statement condemning the blasts.

On Sunday, the NIA arrested Riyas after raiding his house in connection with the 2016 case of 22 Kerala youths leaving for Afghanistan to join the IS — and found that he was allegedly in touch with one among that group.

“He has disclosed that he has been in online contact with absconding accused Abdul Rashid Abdulla @ Abu Isa for a long time and has been following his audio clips, including the clip which he had circulated on social media instigating others to carry out terror attacks in India,” an NIA statement said. Abdulla is believed to be in Afghanistan.

According to the NIA, Riyas was also chatting online “with Abdul Khayoom alias Abu Khalid who was believed to be in Syria”. Khayoom is an accused in the IS case from Valapattanam linked to the group that left for Afghanistan.

Sources said the Hashim video with Riyas was similar to the one retrieved from the phones of six IS suspects detained in Coimbatore last September. “In the video, Hashim is seen asking Muslims to join his cause of forming an Islamic Wilaya (province) in the region,” sources said.

The Coimbatore case was transferred to the NIA last December, and the agency found the video while drafting the chargesheet this year.
“The suspect had deleted the video, which was retrieved by forensic experts. The input was shared with the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), which developed it and gave Sri Lanka the specific input on April 4 of an impending attack,” an intelligence official said.

Apart from Riyas in Palakkad, the NIA searched the houses of two others in Kasaragod for their suspected links with the group that left for Afghanistan — some of them via Sri Lanka and Iran.

Apart from the Hashim video, the NIA claimed to have recovered several “digital devices, including mobile phones, SIM cards, memory cards, pen drives, diaries with handwritten notes in Arabic and Malayalam, DVDs of Dr Zakir Naik, besides untitled DVDs, CDs with religious speeches, books of Dr Zakir Naik and Syed Kutheb”.

That is exactly what the title of this article implies. However when you read it its actually the other way around. That the SL mastermind came to India on a trip and had a few contacts here.

Sri Lanka bombings: police and defence chiefs held on negligence charge

Sri Lanka’s police chief and its former defence minister have been arrested for alleged negligence leading to the Easter Sunday bombings that killed more than 250 people at churches and hotels.

The former defence secretary, Hemasiri Fernando, and the country’s police chief, Pujith Jayasundara, who was on compulsory leave, were arrested at hospitals on Tuesday. They remain in the hospitals under police custody, according to the police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara.

The arrests came a day after prosecutors asked police to explain why they had not arrested the two former senior officials despite being instructed to do so.

On Monday, the attorney general’s department said in a letter to acting police chief CD Wickremaratne that it had ordered Fernando and Jayasundara to be named as suspects and produced before a court because a presidential commission of inquiry found grounds to charge them with dereliction of duties and criminal negligence.

The letter said crimes the officials were suspected of having committed fall within “grave crimes against humanity” under international law.

Police had reportedly sought to question Fernando and Jayasundara but did not because they had been admitted to hospitals. Fernando resigned after the blasts and Jayasundara was sent on compulsory leave.

Since the 21 April suicide attacks, the government has acknowledged it received intelligence reports about the plot beforehand but failed to act on them.

Both Fernando and Jayasundara appeared before a parliamentary committee inquiring into the bombings and described the security failures. The country’s president, Maithripala Sirisena, however, opposed the parliamentary committee conducting a separate inquiry while court cases were being heard on the attacks.

Fernando told the committee Sirisena was not easily accessible for discussions. Jayasundara said Sirisena asked him after the blasts to take responsibility and resign and said he would be cleared in any subsequent inquiry.

Jayasundara also said Sirisena had asked him not to attend national security council meetings since last October, when Sirisena fired the prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, in a power struggle that triggered a seven-week political crisis.

Wickremesinghe was subsequently reinstated by the supreme court.
