    24 lakhs is peanuts !!

To screw with the Indian economy they need to pump them out at the thousands or lakh crores level.

Was listening to a talk by a ex-DGP Kerela and he said two container loads of Rs.1000 notes had entered Kochi. This was years ago.

Think about that. A crore is just a hundred Rs.1000 bundles. A small suitcase would hold it.

Then how much does two container loads of those notes equate to.

In any case the govt has discontinued printing any more Rs.2000 notes so they will slowly disappear.

Now the Paks need to put out four times the number of 500's

Pakistan has been doing it for 30 odd years. Think of compounding.

Halari was on the radar of the Gujarat ATS following the arrest of five Pakistani nationals in January off the Gujarat coast with drugs worth Rs 175 crore, he said.

Counterfeit notes first came to the notice of the concerned division back in 2004. So less than twenty years.

In 2005 they introduced notes with the security thread in it. It's a cat and mouse game.

Source? Should be ongoing since the 90s, IMHV.

Mani mentions it here but the real source is DGP TP Senkumar.

2004 is when they made a sizable seizure i gathered but its only 2008 when the rest of govt gets alerted.

He gave a talk about it here but the audio is bad.

Containers have been coming in since 2006 and he estimates at least 10 lakh crores made it in between 2006 & 2016

Times by 10 for money velocity so its like 100 lakh crores moving in the system. I don't entirely understand this bit.

Ahhh, so your conjecture is based on these news clips. I read a former IB head's (M. K. Dhar) article on FICN smuggling, IIRC, 1.5 decade back. And he talked about ops during the 90s. I learnt about snatch operations (IB & R&AW) from his articles.

I'll look into the remainder of your post later.

Key word here is sizable ; )

Could the Paks do it in the 90's ? proabably

Could they print in amounts enough to matter in the 90's ? unlikely

Course the IB guys had to do something at the time.

But the eye opener here is govt being seized of it only as late as 2008. Why ?

It's only at this point when the quality is good enough and amounts estimated to enter the system start to matter.

The Americans had people from all over the place doing the same thing so they designated a special dept to deal with it

The secret service. Here's an old movie about it : )

It's an amazingly liberal policy for a govt that is hard on terror.

Only thing that matters is that it is effective.

They're continuing with it so it must be.

If these kids get to understand how the state treats them it tells them we are not the bad guys.

Good from a PR as well as counter insurgent perspective.

It also means those that reject it can be dealt with appropriately.
