  • Benefits of nuclear power

The status of Pakistan, as a nuclear power, has a few positive results. Firstly, it has corrected the balance of power in South Asia that was tilting in Indian’s favor after the latter carried out nuclear explosions. India can no more threaten or blackmail Pakistan into a forced solution of the Kashmir problem. It cannot think of attacking (invading) Pakistan’s borders as it had done in 1965. On the other hand, Pakistan’s nuclear status also lent great support to the Arabs against Israel. Feared by this Islamic bomb, Israel is now indecisive about attacking Middle Eastern countries like Syria and Saudi Arabia.

Secondly, Pakistan can now oppose India’s efforts to gain the membership of the Security Council of UN by claiming to be the world’s largest democracy with nuclear capability. If Pakistan cannot get a permanent seat in the Security Council, then why should India get it?

Thirdly, Pakistan’s nuclear capability has given it a golden chance to use it for peaceful purposes. The atomic scientists of the country are now researching on the use of atomic energy for the production of electricity at different places in the country. Several advanced countries like France, Germany, Britain, China, and Japan are already making use of atomic energy to produce cheap electricity on a massive scale. We already have a nuclear power plant in Karachi for the production of electricity; we can also have more and better plants in other cities. For this purpose, our scientists should be sent to the advanced countries to learn the techniques of manufacturing and using the modern nuclear power plants. Nuclear energy can also be used in medicine. Some dangerous diseases like cancer and pains in the joint and eye diseases can possibly be treated and cured through advanced atomic techniques.

    IRTEZA AHMED,

    Karachi.

    • Audio bares rift in Valley terror: Al-Qaeda cell lashes out at Pakistan

The audio has been released through Ansar's media arm, 'Al Sindh Media'.

An audio which is set to widen the chasm between terror organisations operating in Kashmir has been released by Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, an Al-Qaeda cell in Jammu and Kashmir.

The eight-minute audio, which seems to be a note exchanged between the two most wanted terrorists in the state who have been eliminated in separate operations, slams Pakistan's ISI-backed groups for collecting donations in the name of 'Jihad' for Kashmir.

The audio has been released through Ansar's media arm, 'Al Sindh Media'.

The second part of the conversation, purportedly between Abu Dujana, a former Lashkar commander who became an Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind terrorist, and the group's founder Zakir Musa, gives details on how pro-Pakistan terrorists were hounding those who abandoned Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in the region. One of these operatives is Abu Dujana, who switched from Lashkar to Ansar after an ideological rift with the group.

Both the terror commanders give details to how they were harassed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists on leaving their group and following a pan-Islamist ideology.

In the conversation, they also blame Hizb-ul-Mujahideen for harassing families of some terrorists who defected from Hizb to Ansar.

Criticising stone-pelters who shout pro-Pakistan slogans, he is heard telling Musa that they are being misled and they don't die as 'martyrs'.

Dujana had succeeded Abu Qasim as Lashkar-e-Toiba divisional commander in 2015 after he was killed in an encounter with the security forces.

Dujana and Zakir discuss the flow of weapons in Kashmir from Pakistan. Dujana says groups like Hizb, LeT and JeM collect donations in the name of Islam in Pakistan, then buy weapons which are dispatched to Kashmir for 'Jihad'.

In the conversation, they question terror outfits that "snatch" weapons bought with money collected through donations in the name of 'Jihad'.

"This is a fight for land for Pakistan. If they are so sincere, why don't they save Muslims in China?" Musa tells Dujana.

This has once again brought the cleft between the terror groups operating in Kashmir out in open.

Zakir, a harsh critique of separatist politics, had once threatened to behead separatists in Srinagar. He had called on terror groups to enforce Shariah, seeking an Islamic struggle. Dujana, from Gilgit Baltistan, had snuck into the Valley around 2011 and was the most wanted terrorist there.

      Keeping An Eye Out
Although the Indian security establishment believes there is no immediate threat from pan-Islamist group by Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, it is keeping a close eye on the situation.

      • Kolkata Police arrests four Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen militants

The Special Task Force (STF) team of Kolkata Police Tuesday arrested four members of banned terror outfit Neo-JMB (Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh), including three Bangladeshi nationals and one Indian from Kolkata.

        Advertising
The four operatives have been identified as Md. Jiaur Rahman alias Mohsin alias Jahir Abbas (44), Mamonur Rashid (33), Md. Sahin Alam alias Alamin (23) and Robiul Islam (35). While the STF nabbed two Bangladeshi nationals from the vicinity of the Sealdah Railway Station, the other two members were arrested from Howrah Railway station.

A mobile phone containing photos, videos, text and jihadi literature were seized from their possession. “Three of the accused are Bangladeshi nationals and had taken shelter in India to escape arrest in Bangladesh. they were involved in the recruitment and collection of funds for their organisation in India too. The arrested Indian national Robiul Islam was also a member of the organisation and was helping the other members in recruitment and collection of funds,” Joint CP (STF) Subhankar Sinha Sarkar said.

According to the police, the four accused were propagating their agenda through social media. Digital documents and audio files were also recovered from their possession. The Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Foreigners Act.

“Prima Facie, the main motive of their organisation was to overthrow the democratic government in India and Bangladesh to establish Sharia law under a caliphate”, a police official said.

The Kolkata Police will produce the accused in Bankshall Court today seeking their police custody.

Don't think the Israelis ever had designs on the Saudis and these days its the opposite. As far as Syria goes, Israel has made numerous strikes on Hezbollah in Syria since 2013. In fact they didn't want the Syrians to develop nuclear capability and hit the al Kibar plant built with NK assistance back in 2007. It's too bad India didn't do the same with Pakistan earlier.

                  • Article 370 temporary provision, separatists in Valley scared: Amit Shah

Calling Article 370 of the Constitution “temporary” in nature and “not permanent”, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in Lok Sabha Friday that the provision extending special status to Jammu and Kashmir was included in the Constitution in this form in agreement with Sheikh Abdullah, the first Prime Minister of Kashmir.

Indicating that there are slim chances of any dialogue with Hurriyat leaders, Shah also said that his government was there to strike terror in the hearts of separatists and reiterated that the government had zero tolerance for terrorism, and vowed it will be rooted out.

Replying to his first debate in Lok Sabha after becoming Home Minister, Shah said, “As far as the question of 370 is concerned, you must know that it is mentioned as temporary in the Constitution and not permanent. And this was done in agreement with Sheikh Abdullah.

He also blamed the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, for Article 370. “As many as 630 princely states acceded to India. None have Article 370. Nehru negotiated with one state and it has Article 370,” he said.

The debate was on a Bill to grant reservation to those living along the International Border in J&K and a resolution to extend President’s Rule in J&K by another six months — both were passed by voice vote.

Incidentally, the BJP has always maintained that it stands for the abrogation of Article 370 and it believes the provision is an impediment to the development of J&K. The party had even mentioned this in its manifesto before 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Several Opposition members had asked if the government will accept the olive branch extended by Hurriyat chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq when he had suggested that the Hurriyat was ready for talks with the government. J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik, too, had said that the Hurriyat was ready for dialogue with the Centre.

While he did not address the question directly, Shah said, “Those (in Kashmir) who have anti-India thoughts in their minds should fear us. We are not members of the ‘tukde-tukde gang’.”

Speaking of fear in the minds of Kashmiris, he said, “There are two aspects to the debate on fear. Those (in Kashmir) who love peace are happy and enthusiastic that the stranglehold of just three families in Kashmir politics has been broken. But those who harbour feelings of secession in their hearts are scared. They should be scared and this fear is only going to increase.

Replying to Congress leader Manish Tewari’s assertion that the government must rise above ideology to address the Kashmir issue, Shah said, “But our ideology is already in favour of Bharat Mata. There is no need to rise above it. I believe it is only our ideology which can solve this problem. And Kashmir has been a priority for us from the very first day.”

The Home Minister then spelt out how his government dealt with separatist leaders when previous governments had dithered from taking action for “vote-bank politics”.

“There should be democracy, but we should also talk about what all was done for vote-bank politics. Why was Jamaat-e-Islami allowed to function? What was Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front trying to liberate? You didn’t ban them. We had to do it. You gave security to those who engaged in anti-national talk. We found out they had no threat to their life and removed 919 people from that list. They had got security merely for being anti-national,” he said.

All those who supported terrorism in the Valley, we put them under preventive arrest. There were videos of assembling AK-47 shown in Kashmir jails. Pakistan TV channels were beaming propaganda in the Valley. We stopped all that.”

He also said that he does not deny that previous governments, too, tried to fight terrorism in the Valley. “But there is a difference in the way we fight and the results too. Earlier terrorists were engaged with us our own soil after infiltration from Pakistan. But the Modi government struck at the roots of terror and hit them in their own house,” said Shah.

He said the surgical strikes in 2016 followed by Balakot air strikes earlier this year signalled a paradigm shift in the way the world looked at India’s policy on security.

                    • J&K: Clash among militant groups exposes rift in Valley

The fight between indigenous militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and a group associated with the global Islamic State has triggered the first direct clash involving the three in South Kashmir.

A commander of the Islamic State Jammu Kashmir (ISJK), which operates under the banner of Wilayah Al Hind, was killed and a Hizbul militant seriously injured in the gunfight in Anantnag district Wednesday. The injured militant was later arrested by J&K Police.

Speaking to The Indian Express, a senior police officer in South Kashmir said: “We have arrested a terrorist belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen, who was wounded in the firefight. The fight started because of some issue regarding weapons. The injured terrorist is in hospital.”

He said there are “four to five terrorists associated with ISJK in South Kashmir”. “This is a very small group of ISJK and I don’t think they can withstand the pressure of Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar. This is the first such incident in South Kashmir and now one of the ISJK terrorists, who was part of the clash, has issued a video regarding the incident,” he said.

The clash took place inside apple orchards at Sirhama village in Bijbehara late Wednesday night. “The ISJK terrorist killed in the shootout has been identified as Adil Das of Waghama Bijbehara while the injured Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist is Arif Hussain Bhat of Larkipora Anantnag,’’ the officer said.

He said there were “three terrorists belonging to ISJK while four or more Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar terrorists” were involved in the skirmish. “There was firing from both sides,’’ he said.

The ISJK has issued a video in Kashmiri on the incident. “The man who has issued the statement has been identified as ISJK terrorist Khateeb Das, who is apparently related to the killed terrorist,’’ the officer said.

Police sources said Adil Das was a Lashkar militant before switching to Islamic State. They said Lashkar wanted Adil to return their gun, which triggered the fight. While Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar have been silent on the incident, the ISJK video accused them of tricking their commander into believing they had come to join ISJK.

“The tragedy that befell us happened because of the spying of Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar. These are Pakistan’s dirty tricks and (Hizb chief in Kashmir) Riyaz Naiku’s dirty tricks. We will give you proof. They tricked Adil Das into believing that they were going to join Islamic State and swear allegiance to Islamic State (chief) Abu Bakr Baghdadi… After martyring Adil, they opened a burst of fire at (another ISJK man) Turabi (who was there) and it hit their own associate. They are apostates and are fighting for apostate Pakistani state here,’’ the video statement said. The ISJK video also accused Hizbul Mujahideen of killing several other militants.

There has been growing friction between local militant groups and affiliates of global terror outfits in Kashmir. Both Hizbul Mujahideen and the separatist conglomerate Hurriyat Conference has said that there is no role for global outfits like Islamic State and Al Qaida in Kashmir.

While Hizbul Mujahideen, which has a presence only in J&K, advocates accession to Pakistan, the IS and Ansar Ghazwatul Hind (AGH), an affiliate of Al Qaeda with only a few members, have global ambitions. They have vowed to fight Pakistan and local militant outfits.

Though the people of Kashmir have generally stayed away from the radical ideology of the Islamic State and Al Qaeda — only one youth studying in Australia joined Islamic State in the last five years — the ISJK and Ansar have little presence in the Valley.

Islamic State flags first emerged in Srinagar during protests a few years earlier. But it announced its presence for the first time when a local militant Mugais Mir, who was earlier with Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen, was killed in an encounter in Zakura in Srinagar’s outskirts on November 18, 2017.

A day after the killing, Al Amaq, which claims to be the media channel of Islamic State globally, identified Mir as their man. In March 2018, when a Srinagar engineering student with ISJK, Eisa Fazili, was killed, a confrontation broke out during his funeral which led to a heated debate on social media with several confronting the idea of the emergence of these global groups in Kashmir.

With the extension of President’s rule, which has been clamped in Kashmir for the first time since 1996 – till December 2019, the government does not want to give any leeway to even mainstream political parties. The National Conference and People’s Democratic Party, which have repeatedly pleaded for conduct of state elections as soon as possible, are finding themselves marginalised.

“Government programmes like ‘Back to Villages’, under which officers visit villages to redress grievances of people at their doorsteps, is an excellent initiative but its aim is also to send a message and create a buzz that President’s rule is better than that of the elected government,” said a senior bureaucrat, who did not wish to be identified.

The multi-pronged approach, the government believes, is helping calm down Kashmir with a decline in the number of protests and incidents of stone-pelting.
