Nope, this isn't actually about which of the music streaming, pay-per-song download, or satellite radio services are the best.
Rather, it's a question of: why pay for something you used to get for free?
I've swapped out listening to YouTube while I'm at home to just listening to 92 KQRS (Minnesota's Classic Rock Station). I found an alarm clock radio for $3 at a secondhand store, and the sound quality on it is pretty good.
It's completely passive - I just turn a switch and I don't have to press any buttons, touch any screens, click on anything, look at anything, or make any decisions.
How much time does the average person waste in a day doing all of these things just to listen to music - and on top of that, you have to pay for the privilege of doing all that work, just to listen to music?
The cherry on top - I'm not using any internet bandwidth to listen to music at home anymore either.
KQ plays a Tom Petty song every hour or so, with loads of other good 60s/70s/80s rock.
Anybody else favor FM radio over all the options nowadays, that cost money, which also make you do all the labor, just to listen to music?
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - "The Last DJ"
Well you can't turn him into a company man
You can't turn him into a whore
And the boys upstairs just don't understand anymore
Well the top brass don't like him talking so much
And he won't play what they say to play
And he don't want to change what don't need to change
And there goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say
Hey, hey, hey
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
There goes the last DJ
Well some folks say they're gonna hang him so high
Because you just can't do what he did
There's some things you just can't put in the minds of those kids
As we celebrate mediocrity all the boys upstairs want to see
How much you'll pay for what you used to get for free
And there goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say
Hey, hey, hey
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
And there goes the last DJ
[Instrumental break]
Well he got him a station down in Mexico
And sometimes it will kinda come in
And I'll bust a move and remember how it was back then
There goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say
Hey, hey, hey
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
And there goes the last DJ
