Good. Economies should be open and free.

Trade talks between India and US have been happening for months now. Tax on steel & aluminium from India are a miniscule % of exports compared to other countries. India held back taxing US products while talks were on. I am wondering the flexibility shown by the two countries vis-a-vis trade and the hostility with China, as if USGov is determined to punish the CCP. After this friction gets over, the two countries should move on other common pressing engagements such as defence co-op and terrorism. There is always another country to punish and wage war with. :D

You could be in for a long wait then. Chinese commentators suggest that are prepared to drag the trade war out for decades.

OMG! What is not fake in China? If there's a special category of 'fakery' awards at the Oscars, China would win it hands down. Joe, let me know if you plan to buy some shares. :D
China may not get any film awards, but perhaps there should be a award for India for remaining the most corrupt country in Asia and one of the more corrupt in the world. Thats the only thing India beats China with regular ease.

There is quite a number of American firms who go around exploiting cheap labour in Asia. You do realise that India through its housing developments have created debt traps for many Sri lankans? Its alsoclaimed that many of the steel framed houses built by Arcelor Mittal are poorly designed and not as good as the traditional builds.

Actually Sri Lankas debt to China is much smaller than what it owes private USA interests. I think in 2017 Sri Lanka debt to China was about $8billion out of the $48 billion it had occured.

I suspect that's a hollow threat, and even if it isn't, a long lasting trade war from all the major industrial powers (not just the US) will put half of its population back into extreme poverty.

i don't think it would be that serious. even assuming a trade war where all the major industrial powers team up (which isn't going to happen, especially under this administration), it'd be enough to slow down Chinese growth to unacceptable levels for the CCP-- but it wouldn't be enough to cause that type of economic collapse.

In Europe, the CIA buys journalists. See the book https://www.amazon.com/Journalists-H...dp/B01HC1HZGQ/.

Dr. Udo Ulfkotte, a former editor for the German main daily newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), has first hand knowledge of how the CIA and German Intelligence (BND) bribe journalists to write articles free of truth, facts, and with a decidedly pro-Western, pro-NATO bent or, in other words, propaganda. In his bestselling book Bought Journalists ("Gekaufte Journalisten"), Dr. Ulfkotte explains in great detail the workings of the US and NATO’s propaganda campaign and how a lack of compliance with it, on the part of a journalist, can cost a career. Dr. Ulfkotte also provides a wealth of names! Journalist for Hire: How the CIA Buys the News is the English translation of Dr. Ulfkotte’s bestselling book. (Udo Ulfkotte Journalists for Hire)

The comments section is even more interesting, claiming that the powers that be are preventing it from being published in the USA.

With an asking price of $900 US for the book , it appears that way.

... former editor until he turned one of the best-known conspiracy theorist lunatics in Germany in 2003 and founded or joined various anti-islamist and alt-right populist groups in the next couple years. And even before that he was writing for an ultraconservative paper as a journalist who was known for having his work "raising money" for him from interested parties - such as his articles that deconstructed oil spills and environmental catastrophe in Nigeria in the 90s being conveniently coincidental with Shell sponsoring trips for him.

As for "Bought Journalists" (the actual english title is "Journalists for Hire"), even alt-right conspiracy groups in Germany considered it "disappointing" as it's full of internal inconsistencies, only copies works by others and "misleading in its conclusions" (literacy critics by comparison just called it "an amok run in book form").

Gee, that Amazon price of about 20 bucks right now for the original German version gotta be fake. As for the English translation, gee, might that have to do with the fact that the - Canadian - startup company that bought the English-language rights no longer exists and - since it's a vanity press thing, i.e. the author paying for the print - there won't be any new prints since the author is dead?

Murdered by the CIA and made to look like a heart attack? Afterall the CIA and the FSB are no different when it comes to dealing with people who they consider a threat.
With the book itsel......it does not mean that what he was alleging is true, and with the accused parties doing teir very best to discredit the story.
Anyway we know from Wikileaks that the US is far from being angelic.

                    • Chinese on student visa in US arrested for spying on engineers, scientists

The FBI has arrested a 27-year-old Chinese national, who came to America on a student visa, on charges of acting as an illegal agent of China in the United States. Ji Chaqqun, who lived in Chicago, worked at the direction of a high-level intelligence officer in the Jiangsu province Ministry of State Security (MSS), a provincial department of the MSS for China, according to a criminal complaint and affidavit filed in the US District Court in Chicago.

He was tasked with providing the intelligence officer with biographical information of eight individuals for possible recruitment, according to the complaint. The individuals included Chinese nationals who were working as engineers and scientists in the US, some of whom were US defence contractors, according to the complaint. Ji has been charged with one count of knowingly acting in the US.

He was born in China and arrived in the US in 2013 on an F-1 Visa, for the purpose of studying electrical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, according to the complaint. In 2016, Ji enlisted in the US Army Reserves as an E4 Specialist under the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest programme, which authorises the US Armed Forces to recruit certain legal aliens whose skills are considered vital to the national interest.

In his application to participate in the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) programme, Ji specifically denied having had contact with a foreign government within the past seven years, the complaint states. In a subsequent interview with a US Army officer, Ji again failed to disclose his relationship and contacts with the intelligence officer, the charge alleged.

I think the only way for a collapse to happen is to embargo food and fuel. China already has a lot of plants and equipment to make what it needs. The real economy is there, so the only danger is from a market collapse, which can be avoid with China's state control.

I am curious about American demands on China though. We know that it is politically unacceptable, but is it even economically acceptable? As far as I understand, American demands include that China refrains from challenging the US at the WTO without reciprocity and what amounts to a concession to be a middle-income economy.
