As far as their economic performance record goes i cannot say they bring anything more than the previous party and the previous party was likely better at it.

I usually joke that they should hire Manmohan Singh as a consultant. He recently joined the parliamentary committee for economic affairs so he will have a say.

Btw, India has many illegals from Pak, the Hindus who once having crossed the border never go back. Police harass them, and they live a non-existent life, day to day, mouth to mouth.
Does the CAA cater for these people or are they in some other category ?

I think, I told you the politics behind the agitations and finally the Assam Accord. It was not the illegal Bangladeshis.
Assam accords reached a compromise that the cut off date would be Mar 25 1971 from the previous demand of 1951

I had an argument one day with my dad, many months back about the excess fat in their department, which is SPWD (State PWD). I wondered aloud the necessity of 100 clerks in their office, work which can be done by 2 people and 2 desktops. I was yelling project management, and scrum, and triage meetings, and how I single-handedly can turn around their unit from a loss making pathetic tax-payers cesspool, into a profitable venture. I came to know, that they have desktops, 10 of those, but still have the 100+ clerks. I got a lecture on Socialism. That we are a big country (by population), and the Government has to take care of all it can, with our tax-payers money, else there'd be riots. Which is why there is still a craze among C rung MBA college graduates to apply for a peon's job in a Government office.

The more the laws - Government can go after anyone who they see as a threat. The more the laws - work gets done at a snail's pace, and bribe reaches top echelons of the power structure. It's a vicious cycle. In Hinduism, we call it State Karma.
I was listening to a talk and the speaker dropped this statement. Laws & regulations in India are made with the express intent to extort from business and people. These onerous laws are the source of corruption. They are impossible to comply with and the result is people bribe their way out of them. Unlike in the west where the laws are simpler and everybody follows them. In India we have arbitrary application of said laws.

There was a saying that went in the US corruption occurs at the law making stage and in India it occurs at the law breaking stage. I think now its clear its done at the law making stage in India.

No party is going to address this because it makes them a lot. I don't know how Modi can tackle it.

But if you want India to move up the ease of doing business scale an effort will have to be made.

This was my first impression as well

Notes Ban, TT, 370, Ayodhya all came and went and the protests were minimal. Go back to 2014 and we've never seen any protests of this magnitude

Govt got its outreach wrong this time or were taken unawares.

Thing is longer these protests go on less it seems like outreach and more like opposition taking advantage.

I too think so. It's been a drab, even though, positive effects of GST would be felt in the time to come, other than that, there's nothing to talk about actually.

Assamese landlord were the ones who bought in cheap muslim labour to Assam in the early 20th century to work in their fields. This I came to know from a Tamil guy in BR, and he was kind of a researcher doing his PhD or something. This dude has knowledge which one doesn't find in the mainstream.

When Americans would have moved 90% of their population having built colonies on Mars, we'd still be left thinking whom to vote along caste lines.

The fundamental wrong that happened to India in 1947 is not the creation of Pakistan. It is dividing Indians along caste lines and founding the country on not merit. This is the fault of appeasement politics for which I lay blame squarely on Congress politicians (Nehru, Gandhi), as also Ambedkar. Ambedkar should have stood not for reservations, but for equality in the eyes of law for all oppressed sections of people. We'd have had a much better country today.

RSS kept out from reaching people through its foot soldiers. Concerns of Indian muslims were not addressed beforehand. Opposition smelled blood, and hit when the iron was red-hot. Fear and loathing of the underprivileged, illiterate, caste-based, narrow-minded <etcetera> population which constitutes the majority of everyday Indians. Same thing happened with demonetization. Usual petty fracas repeating itself, showing us the true competence of the Indian bureaucracy along-with the Government that retains its trust on those.

Thing is, if the Government wants to kill somebody, there should be a solid plan A. Then a plan B, and a plan C. Getting caught with pants down in the planning phase itself doesn't inspire much confidence. Professional killers do their homework much better than this Government.

              • This is one way to interpret CAA/NRIC

                - It's causing the Banglas to act on current & future infiltrators
                - There will be an exodus of Banglas back to Bangladesh as it will become harder now to remain undetected in India

The immediate effect therefore acts to stem present & future migration

Who wants to protest at the home minister now : )

Bangla govt does not mention the exact reason they suspended mobile connectivity on their side of the border with India other than it was for security reasons.

They've seen about 300 people return in November. Now what would cause them to snap mobile links recently.

                We can only speculate.

The MEA is responding to this statement by the USCIRF

USCIRF Raises Serious Concerns and Eyes Sanctions Recommendations for Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in India, Which Passed Lower House Today | USCIRF | Dec 09 2019

..with the following recommendation that the MEA found warranted

If the CAB passes in both houses of parliament, the United States government should consider sanctions against the Home Minister and other principal leadership.
                          Why ?

The CAB enshrines a pathway to citizenship for immigrants that specifically excludes Muslims, setting a legal criterion for citizenship based on religion. The CAB is a dangerous turn in the wrong direction; it runs counter to India’s rich history of secular pluralism and the Indian Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law regardless of faith.

In conjunction with the ongoing National Register of Citizens (NRC) process in Assam and nationwide NRC that the Home Minister seeks to propose, USCIRF fears that the Indian government is creating a religious test for Indian citizenship that would strip citizenship from millions of Muslims.
These assertions will be tested in the SC soon

The basis for these charges come from the Assam experience

Fate of Nearly 2 million in Assam, India Examined in New USCIRF Report | USCIRF | Nov 19 2019

“Close to two million long-time residents of Assam may soon be deemed stateless. They are being stripped of their citizenship without a fair, transparent, and well-regulated NRC process,” said USCIRF Commissioner Anurima Bhargava, who testified about Assam last week. “Worse yet is that Indian political officials have repeatedly conveyed their intent to direct and use the NRC process to isolate and push out Muslims in Assam. And now, across India, political leaders are seeking to expand the NRC and implement different citizenship standards for Muslims altogether.”
She mentions that hindus were also among illegals and then quotes statements from the gov that nothing will happen to them (which also applies to the muslims) and some other govt spokespeople saying that something was wrong because NRC found illegal hindus in the list !!

See, everybody assumes illegal hindus will be ok which isn't true but that necessarily illegal muslims will be in trouble which again isn't true either.

Anyway she compares the 19 lakh that did not qualify for NRC could become stateless and create a Rohingya like situation. The notion of citizenship in India could be used as a tool for religous persecution & violence. Like Burma.

She does mention that GOI has been in touch saying those 19 lakh won't lose any rights or privleges they currently enjoy. This caused Assamese to agitate because they have a problem with it.

USCIRF will continue to monitor the situation.

I don't see anything wrong with her testimony, she pretty much mentions all the arguments those against use a full month before the protests start. That is CAA and NRC becoming NRIC

We've denied visas to them twice in the past. Soon after the UPA won in 2009 and again in 2016.

Both times they said the below

USCIRF has been able to travel to many countries, including those that are among the worst offenders of religious freedom, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, China, and Burma. One would expect that the Indian government would allow for more transparency than have these nations, and would welcome the opportunity to convey its views directly to USCIRF
It's interesting that both UPA & BJP think USCIRF will create headaches they don't want to deal with. But the denial of visas gives the impression we're hiding something.

Goons of this shade and hype should be castrated in public. Shame on them who supports such kind of violent ideologies. I know one in this very forum who supports such kinds of far-right acts. And he thinks he is a scholar. Yeah a North Indian jihadi twat.
