  • Their contention is we're trying to silence the people instead of preventing terrorist actions. But the numbers tell their own story. The last month has been the most peaceful in the region with zero state inflicted casualties. Clearly showing the dependence of terrorists on mobiles and internet to instigate unrest.

When the Gorkhas were agitating the internet was off for a hundred days. Don't recall any international outcry about that.

8 million people under lockdown ? seriously ? NSA said only 10 out of 199 police districts in the entire J&K have prohibitory orders. That is not 8 million under lockdown.

Families unable to speak to loved ones ? landlines have been restored over two weeks back. If you don't have a landline then it will be harder to contact people. But there are phone booths. It was harder in the initial two weeks but its eased since.

    • They caught the perps

The press hammers on about when internet will be restored but there are no clear answers here

About restoring mobile he mentions there is "provocation from across the border". When pressed he does not explain further. Reporters then asked whether we had conceded mobile space to Pakistan which he denied.

But we get an inkling from what the NSA said.

A New Record Since 1988: Not A Single Bullet Fired For A Month In Kashmir | League of India | Sept 13 2019

“We would like to see all restrictions go (in Jammu and Kashmir)… That depends on how Pakistan behaves. It’s a stimulant and response situation. If Pakistan starts behaving, terrorists don’t intimidate and infiltrate,” Doval stated in a strongly-worded message to Islamabad.

“Pakistan is trying to create a situation and then tell the international community that there is unrest. If Pakistan stops sending signals through its towers to operatives, we can lift restrictions,” he was quoted as saying by newswire agency ANI.
So the Paks have cell towers across the border communicating to the terrorists who presumably have phones that can receive these signals. What stopping mobile connectivity does is make these signals stand out more clearly where the perps can be located. Since they're the only ones with working cell phones. This is why the last month has been so quiet and the least violent since 1988. But they have to keep communications to a minimum to avoid getting caught.

If mobile connectivity is restored then their signals can hide better among local ones. This problem is different to what the Israelis faced. The Israelis did not have to deal with rogue towers setting up alternate nets.

J&K govt restricts access to media facilitation centre in Srinagar; withdrawn later | IE | Sept 16 2019

Only journalists accredited by the state government are being allowed into the centre. Entry for all non- accredited journalists, including journalists from New Delhi, is restricted.
        Why ?

Director, Information, J&K, Sherish Asgar said: “Yes, we have done this following some complaints of misuse.”

        • Just for the Texas reference

How Modi, Trump stand to gain from Texas event | ET | Sept 16 2019

The early 1990s were a challenging time in Kashmir and a difficult period in India-US relations. Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao had to contend with a newly elected US president, Bill Clinton, who even named Kashmir in a UN speech while referring to human rights violations across the world. Clinton had also appointed Robin Raphel as the first assistant secretary of State for South Asia. Raphel left no opportunity to castigate India on Kashmir.

It was with this backdrop that Narasimha Rao addressed a joint sitting of both chambers of the US Congress in 1994. He brought up Texas to make the point why Jammu & Kashmir was an inseparable part of India. “Indeed, in 1868, your Supreme Court had to say, and I quote, ‘When Texas became one of the United States, she entered into an indissoluble relation.

All the obligations of perpetual union and all the guarantees of republican government in the union attached at once to the State. It was the incorporation of a new member into the political body, and it was complete final.’ India accepts this statement as truly characteristic of a multicultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious republic like India or the United States, and as totally unassailable.”

Texas was a part of Mexico, but had declared independence in the 1830s. It later entered an agreement of annexation with the US. Washington ratified the agreement, resulting in hostilities between the US and Mexico, followed by territorial disputes over where the boundary should pass. Interestingly, this is now the boundary on which Trump wants to build ‘The Wall’ between the US and Mexico.

Restore normal life to Kashmir, Supreme Court tells government | Reuters | Sept 16 2019

“We direct Jammu and Kashmir to make the very best endeavor to make sure normal life returns,” Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said on Monday, after a panel of three judges heard several petitions relating to Kashmir, which is also claimed by Pakistan.

The court had previously said authorities there needed more time to restore order in Kashmir.

Fake Twitter handles of Indian army officers spawn as Pakistan ups propaganda | HT | Sept 18 2019

“In the past 6 days at least 69 of my Indian soldiers have been killed in unprovoked fire by Pakistan Army,” a fake Twitter handle allegedly that of a serving colonel serving in Jammu and Kashmir said.
At least 50 Twitter accounts masquerading as personal handles of senior generals and commanders including Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat, Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh “highlighting alleged atrocities” in Kashmir were shut down at the request of the security agencies, said senior officials in the security apparatus who didn’t want to be named.
Similarly, a fake Twitter account allegedly that of former Directorate General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lieutenant General Vinod Bhatia said, “according to my intelligence report there is more than 700 Kashmiri has been killed thousands of women were raped there is completely blackout, school colleges are closed. Shame on Us.”

Likewise, the Twitter handle of former Vice Chief of Army Staff Devraj Anbu said the removal of Article 370 was a big mistake.
The assault in the cyber world has been so severe that New Delhi has tasked a team comprising security agencies and the military to monitor the cyber world for such messages and counter them. The messages from the fake accounts of well known individuals create doubt among the people at large, affect the morale of the nation and, at another level they affect the forces as well, said an officer associated with monitoring these messages.

                      • See, i knew where this "hindu nationalist" thing was heading

How the White Nationalists Who Love Trump Found Inspiration in the Group That Gave Us Narendra Modi | The Intercept | Sept 21 2019

Hit job, courtesy Mehdi, nice timing just when Modi is in Houston. Take a shot at Trump too, why don't you. And you have a twofer.

Is it any wonder that the Hindu nationalist from India has formed such a close friendship with the white nationalist in the White House?
Do Modi & Trump have a "close relationship" ? can't see it in the body language maybe Mehdi knows some thing i don't

Then why is it this white nationalist US president won't come to India for Republic day like the previous president ? was Obama a white nationalist too : D

Can Trump's base find India on the map ? and if so do they give a damn!

None of this is particularly bad because we don't want Trump looking at us. Better for us he look at China instead.

                          • Was wondering why Houston ? its midway so people from either coast travel halfway. A compromise.

Modi was at the Madison square garden in 2014 anyway. Half the crowd though. His second term has attracted more followers.

If Houston is midway then why not Chicago. Texas is more friendly to Trump.

The event management team that showed the most initiative sealed the deal.

Houston is a Pak stronghold, one of the few places where Paks actually call their businesses as Pakistani instead of masquerading as South Asian or Indo-Pakistani.

Guess they wanted wanted to stuck it to their face knowing fully well that American police wont tolerate their shenanigans like what the Brits did in London. All that high level organization to humiliate Modi turned into a damp squib...
