Quick! It's time to reassess China's influence.

North Korean leader suspends nuclear and missile tests, shuts down test site

By Anna Fifield April 20 at 6:20 PM Email the author

TOKYO — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has declared he will suspend nuclear and missile tests starting Saturday, and that he will shut down the site where the previous six nuclear tests were conducted.

“From April 21, North Korea will stop nuclear tests and launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles,” the Korean Central News Agency said in a report Saturday morning.

This came out of a meeting of the central committee of the ruling Worker’s Party of Korea held Friday to discuss policy issues related to “a new stage” in a “historic” period.

“The North will shut down a nuclear test site in the country’s northern side to prove the vow to suspend nuclear test,” KCNA reported.

This comes less than a week before Kim is due to meet with South Korean president Moon Jae-in in the first inter-Korean summit in 11 years. Moon has said that Kim is willing to discuss denuclearization and that he will not insist on American troops being withdrawn from South Korea as part of any deal.

So yeah it's the usual line of bulls--t from the DPRK, but my question is, what's the reason behind Fat Boy offering these concessions*?

Did China put him up to it?

Is he trying to buy time for whatever reason?

Maybe hoping to wring "gifts" of food and money out of the ROK and US?

*That he doesn't have slightest intention of following through on

Throwing the propaganda ball into Trump's court so that any failure of the upcoming summit is the American's fault. How he would forced Trump to back out I have no idea. This is everything we're asking for.

Yeah, it's really puzzling. It sounds like a great deal for all concerned (it's North Korea though, so of course it's a truckload of manure) and all Trump has to do is show up and say "OK!"

Then Fat Boy actually has to put up or shut up....which makes me think he's just stalling for some reason.

                    • Would love to see how the North Korean state media is portraying/reporting all of these last several months of developments. Purely for entertainment purposes, of course.

I bet there's that lady with the hairdo/dress on NKTV claiming that Kim has inflicted a "massive defeat" on the "US imperialist warmongers', and that the CIA director "sulked to the table" like the "bent and broken dog that he is".

                      • The actual line is that NK nukes are more advanced than anything else on earth and thus, no further need for anymore development.

I took the time to watch a clip on the BBC of the NKTV lady with the announcement... what does Kim mean when she says North Korea is "verified" when it comes to nuclear weapons?

                          • It's propaganda. It means that Kim can destroy the world.

I know it's propaganda... I was wondering whether NK is implying with the word "verified" that they have working nuclear weapons, or if they mean that other powers have "recognized" NK as a nuclear power.

                              • Never take anything NK media says at face value. They are trying to tell the NK population that the world is scared of KJU and that he's the one dictating terms to Trump.
