Britons would now vote to stay in EU, want second referendum: poll

LONDON (Reuters) - More Britons want to remain a member of the European Union than leave, according to a survey published on Sunday which also showed voters want to make the final decision themselves.

Britain is due leave the EU on March 29, but Prime Minister Theresa May is struggling to get her exit deal approved by parliament, opening up huge uncertainty over whether a deal is possible, or even whether the country will leave at all.

The survey by polling firm YouGov showed that if a referendum were held immediately, 46 percent would vote to remain, 39 percent would vote to leave, and the rest either did not know, would not vote, or refused to answer the question.

When the undecided and those who refused to answer were removed from the sample, the split was 54-46 in favor of remaining.

That is broadly in line with other polls in recent months which show a deeply divided electorate, in which opinion has swung towards remaining in the EU. The 2016 referendum voted 52 to 48 percent in favor of leaving.

The poll of more than 25,000 voters was commissioned by the People's Vote campaign, which is spearheading an increasingly vocal push for a second referendum on Brexit.

On Sunday, May reiterated her opposition to holding a second referendum, saying it would be divisive and disrespectful to those who voted to leave in the initial vote, and also highlighted a lack of time available to hold a new referendum.

But, the survey showed 41 percent thought the final decision about Brexit should be made by a new public vote versus 36 percent who believe it should be up to parliament. Removing those who are undecided, the split was 53 percent in favor of another referendum and 47 percent against.

Lawmakers are due to vote on whether to accept May's exit deal in the week beginning Jan. 14.

That is why they should remain. This process of voting is flawed to begin with. This is exactly the same as the last with the opposite result.

Meaning unless there is a suitable margin to leave then remain.

This whole exercise was pointless to begin with as it will amount to nothing.

And what if the second referendum also says leave? You keep having them till you get the result you want? Or if you have one referendum saying leave and one saying remain, should you do a best of three? That is not how referendums work.

I am not sure why you see things that way. It is pretty obvious that any vote represents the views of people at that precise time only. It is like a photograph of opinion. But a person may be smiling in a photo one day and cry the next. The fact that there were so many lies said by the leave campaign (just like Trumpkin and his 'Mexico will pay for the wall' BS) and that the funding of it is now a matter of criminal investigation is sufficient cause to raise questions about the authenticity of the first photograph necessitating the need for a second.

Because, uh, that's not what Brexit is about. Brexit is about the British population deciding to abandon exactly that possibility by leaving the civilized world and resigning itself to a North-Korea-esque dungeon pit. "The deal" is May trying to carve out benefits from that situation going as far as she can without sparking a civil war in her country.

That doesn't matter. What matters now is that a massive chunk of pro-Brexit British voters decided to reverse their position on Brexit -- should another vote be held again.

The Euro's are in no mood to handle domestic UK affairs. They have to keep the Euro project going, counter the far right, deal with general weakness in France & Germany. Already the Americans are acting up and now the Brits with this Brexit crap.
