Berlin police say nine dead, many injured by truck at Christmas market

    By Michael Nienaber | BERLIN
(Reuters) - A truck plowed into a crowded Christmas market in the German capital Berlin on Monday evening, killing nine people and injuring up to 50 others, police said.

German media, citing police at the scene, said first indications pointed to an attack on the market, situated at the foot of the ruined Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church, which was kept as a bombed-out ruin after World War Two.

The incident evoked memories of an attack in France in July when Tunisian-born man drove a 19-tonne truck along the beach front, mowing down people who had gathered to watch the fireworks on Bastille Day, killing 86 people. The attack was claimed by Islamic State.

The truck careered into the Berlin market at what would have been one of the most crowded times for the Christmas market, when adults and children would be gathering in the traditional cluster of wooden huts that sell food and Christmas goods.

Berlin police said nine people were killed

"I heard a big noise and then I moved on the Christmas market and saw much chaos...many injured people," Jan Hollitzer, deputy editor in chief of Berliner Morgenpost, told CNN.

    "It was really traumatic."

Police cars and ambulances converged quickly on the scene as a huge security operation unfolded. The fate of the driver of the truck was not immediately clear, but Bild newspaper said he was on the run.

Emma Rushton, a tourist visiting Berlin, told CNN the truck seemed to be traveling at about 40 mph (65 Kmh).

Asked how many were injured, she said that as she walked back to her hotel, she saw at least 10.

Julian Reichelt, editor in chief of Bild Berlin, said that there was currently a massive security operation under way.

"The scene certainly looks like a reminder of what we have seen in Nice," Reichelt said,

US-Polish political lobby agency (Atlantic Council) claims body in truck cabin is Polish driver whose truck was nabbed for the operation.

Federal Attorney has taken over investigations. With that's it officially a suspected terror attack.

Owner of truck currently claims that the truck was loaded with steel bars in Italy for delivery to Berlin, but that his last contact with the driver - his cousin - was today around noon, saying that he'd left the truck near the company where he was supposed to deliver since they didn't want to unload until Tuesday morning. Driver supposedly talked to his wife on the phone at 4 pm. The attack took place at 8 pm. Story doesn't quite click timing-wise that way from the logistics side, especially taking into account that yesterday was Sunday.

Hm,hm...steel bars, heavy load, good for maintaining the momentum and ensuring maximum damage if the driver is taken out. RIP to the victims.

If it was planned than they must have someone inside in order to get the cargo manifest and the route. Other option is that the truck was sized as an act of opportunity and that the real driver was killed by jihhady lover. Sad but expected.

German police are questioning a man they believe ploughed a lorry into a busy Christmas market in the heart of Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring 48.
The driver is an Afghan or Pakistani asylum seeker, according to security sources cited by DPA news agency.
oops, i remember saying more germans will die, and once again i'm correct.

                      RIP to the victims

The same cycle repeats as we grow numb. Mourn the dead, the right blames the liberals for naivety and treason, the liberals call in fainter voices for tolerance and moderation. Rinse .... Repeat.

Agree with the post above, hard decisions will have to be made.

RIP to the dead and thoughts wishing strength and comfort for the long road to recovery ahead for the many more injured and the families of the victims.

As an Israeli friend posted on Facebook, unless the driver jumped down from the truck shouting Jesus is the greatest, Merkel may be finished.

Consequences for Credit negotiations and the future of the EU are attendant.

Is this the straw that's going break the back of European liberals?

                            Doubtful.

Might get a Black/Red/Green government now though. With the Greens reminding us who the interventionist party in Germany is.
