RIP to the victims and may those who have been injured recover swiftly.

Refresh my memory...the truck ramming incident in France...did that end up being tied to ISIS? not just claimed but proven to be? I honestly don't recall.

No evidence of a connection to ISIS has been found so far. Was coincidentally just reiterated in French media last week since last friday the trial against three suspects in connection with the attack began (two Albanians for illegal weapon deals and a French-Tunisian for acting as an intermediary between the attacker and those two).

And all of them derive it from the Washington Times... it's the usual round robin. Unless there's something official e.g. published by Amaq (the ISIS press agency) or Bayan (ISIS-operated radio station) they haven't claimed it.

I want everybody to take a deep breath before posting further in this thread. Stick to the facts and debate the issue. Personal attacks are counterproductive and will have consequences.

He was an utterly incapable, unadapted, irresponsible, psychopathic personality, full of empty, infantile fantasies, but cursed with the keen intuition of a rat or a guttersnipe. He represented the shadow, the inferior part of everybody’s personality, in an overwhelming degree, and this was another reason why they fell for him.”

The person initially arrested (Navid B., 23yo Pakistani refugee) has been released. Under current German law if held longer he'd have to seen a judge within the next four hours, and the non-evidence presented would have had the judge release him anyway.

Actually wonder whether they'll fly him back to Berlin or just kick him out on the street as usual. He was transferred by helicopter to the seat of the Federal Attorney in Karlsruhe last night, on the other side of the country.

Might also just as well have gotten an idea from the 12-year-old boy who was placed in custody over trying to "bomb" an x-mas market. That also broke nationwide news last week, although it actually happened two weeks earlier and was already in the local press then.

They did so an hour ago. And they cite Amaq.

Reuters broke with the news (citing Amaq) around 18:19 GMT, an hour after my above post.

                      Amaq just confirmed. Its ISIS.

" The Islamic State released a statement on Tuesday through its Amaq news agency describing the driver of the truck as “a soldier” who had answered the call to wage attacks against countries fighting the group, which is also known as ISIS, ISIL or Daesh. But it offered no other details about the driver’s identity or whether he had directly interacted with the group or was just sympathetic to it."

The wording is almost identical to their equally unproven claim in the Nice attack.

From what I have read the Nice attack was an iSIS inspired (as in inspiration) lone wolf. Sorry no source. Here is an interesting read on lone wolf style attacks. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/ar...d-more-deadly/

I am trying to present the things in a way that you in the West can understand, however wrongly it might be. There is no difference between ISIS or ISIS inspired, lone wolf, sad sheep, lonely turtle or what ever type of attack. Just as there is no difference between ISIS soldier and the terrorist. Islam as a political doctrine demands violence towards anything that is different than it and it really doesn't matter if the destruction of other is carried out by fist, the thing between man's leg, knife, rifle, axe or nuclear bomb. It doesn't matter if it is committed by one or two or 1000 Muslims, the weight of the message is the same. Unfortunately the individualistic and rational mind of the west cannot grasp the totalitarian mindset of the hive mind that exists in that realm. By constantly trying to dissect and separate different forms of that one whole, you are weakening your response because you cannot identify the threat. Since you cannot identify it, you cannot form an response to it and as long as you are not able to do so, you will be on losing side and these things will continue to happen.

And I don't want that to happen.

So if the driver did not know a particular super secret ISIS hand shake, that some how means the driver is not an Islamic extremist terrorist and is in no way connected to IS?

                                Police has a new suspect:

Ahmed A. aka Anis A., either 21 or 23, Tunisian*, applied for asylum in Germany in April but was rejected and afterwards on a Duldung, i.e. to be deported (apparently pretty soon too). They apparently found the Duldung identity paper slipped under the driver seat in the truck cabin. He owns identity papers with three different names on them.

The guy was under surveillance by security authorities as a possible "terrorist risk" for connections to the Abu Walla network. He disappeared about two weeks ago when police was seeking to arrest him on an assault charge.

Abu Walla is a Iraqi salafist who was recruiting for IS in Germany and who was arrested in early November along with four others. Abu Walla is considered the prime representative of IS in Germany; for about a year police could not find enough evidence to prove a direct IS connection though (despite multiple razzias in the salafist scene, mostly around July) - until a German IS returnee recently named who had recruited him.

Due to blood traces in the cabin police assumes the suspect is injured - both from the crash of the truck and from fighting the driver beforehand; the driver, despite being shot, was alive until the crash and only died afterwards. They are therefore also checking hospitals in Berlin and Brandenburg states for the suspect.

It can be assumed that the Pakistani first arrested was held that long - pretty much as long as possible without seeing a judge - despite contrary evidence already having been found so as not to alert the new suspect to already ongoing police investigations searching for him.

                                * He's apparently from Tataouine btw - the town that inspired George Lucas for Tattooine in Star Wars. The town is more recently known as a IS hotspot in Tunisia.
