A great big haere mai to the USS Sampson that steamed past Welly early this morning. She was due in Auckland for the RNZN 75th celebrations today (with usual inner city anti-US professional protestors of course) but instead responded to a request to join HMNZS(s) Canterbury, Wellington, Te Kaha and Endeavour and the RNZAF NH90's in airlifting people and materials in and out of the Nth Canterbury/Marlborough region.
Also on their way are the HMAS Darwin and HMCS Vancouver. Hopefully we can get a few crayfish and paua out to the crews while they're there. No better way to show the flag IMO and no better place to do it. Kia ora. :-)In the realm of spirit, seek clarity; in the material world, seek utility.

In the Nth island the Indo-Australian plate is subducting under the Pacific plate, hence all those massive volcanoes.
In between is Cook Strait, a literal concrete mixer of fractured rock, where vaste amounts of the Tasman drain into the Pacific.
The first of the now roughly 3000 quakes we've had in the last week was rated at 7.8, roughly the equivalent of about eight million tonnes of TNT.
The quake started near Hamner on the southern end of the fault and accelerated north east along the fault, peaking off the coast of Kaikoura then slammed into the concrete mixer in Cook Strait and moving Wellington 10cm northward. At Kaikoura it lifted the seabed upward between 2m and 6 m depending on location.
Some pissy little boat that beeps doesn't have a damn thing to do with it. An average nuclear bomb would have FA effect compared to the energy stored in our beautiful and deadly isles. In the realm of spirit, seek clarity; in the material world, seek utility.

oh, according to our geologists we have a 97% probabilility of a 6.8 or greater in Wellington within the next month. No pissy little beeping ships will have the slightest effect. ;-)In the realm of spirit, seek clarity; in the material world, seek utility.
