  • Pak's withdrawal from Gilgit-Baltistan will help resolve Kashmir issue: US Body

DALLAS (US): Describing Pakistan as an "occupier" of Gilgit-Baltistan, a US-based organisation has said that Islamabad's withdrawal from this part of Jammu and Kashmir would help resolve the Kashmir issue.

"Indian Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi's policy to highlight human rights violations in Gilgit-Baltistan is a positive step," said Senge Sering, director of the Washington DC-based Gilgit-Baltistan National Congress.

In a statement, Sering said the UN Security Council through its resolutions has declared Pakistan an intruder in Gilgit-Baltistan.

"The international community including India and other neighbors of Pakistan must remind Pakistan that it is an occupier in Gilgit-Baltistan and only Pakistan's withdrawal from Gilgit-Baltistan will help fast track the settlement of dispute over Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan," he said.

"Since Gilgit-Baltistan is a disputed area, the people of Gilgit-Baltistan should have the right to initiate direct talks with the UN Office representatives, the government of Kashmir in Srinagar and the Indian Union government in Delhi to come up with mechanisms to solve the dispute," Sering added.

In PoK's Gilgit, protests against crackdown by Pakistani security forces

GILGIT CITY: Protesters have taken to the streets in the Gilgit-Baltistan region+ of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir(PoK) against human rights abuses and crackdown by the Pakistani security forces.
Over 500 youth, including Gilgit's top political activist Baba Jan, have been taken into custody by the Pakistani security forces.
Angry protesters said these young men were imprisoned for demanding political rights and asking the Pakistani army to leave Gilgit's soil.

Raising "anti-Pakistan" slogans, angry protesters took to the streets in Gilgit town, Astore, Diamer and Hunza of the the Gilgit- Baltistan region, which is only Shia-dominated area in Sunni-dominated Pakistan.
The political crackdown and arrests in Gilgit were made against people protesting against the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor+ (CPEC), which they said would only benefit China and Pakistan's Punjabi traders.

The youth of Gilgit are not being involved in any manner with the CPEC and those who are protesting are being harshly dealt with, protesters said.

    "PoK is ours"

During an all-party meeting called to discuss the recent violence in Kashmir on Friday, PM Narendra Modi asserted that "PoK is ours"+ and added that there was a need to track persons who had fled the PoK so that their accounts could be publicised.
"Foreign ministry should take initiatives to develop contact with citizens of PoK settled abroad and apprise them about how their family and friends are treated there," Modi said.

No compromise on Kashmir, PoK is ours: PM Modi at all-party meet

NEW DELHI: An all-party meeting called to discuss the recent violence in Kashmir unanimously rejected a move by the UNHRC to send a team to the state to investigate alleged human rights violations by Indian security forces.

While PM Modi asserted that PoK "is ours",+ foreign minister Sushma Swaraj told party leaders that the government had received a letter from the UN Human Rights Council, exploring the possibility of a visit to J&K. This was in apparent response to Pakistan writing to the body. All parties in one voice rejected any outside probe into the violence and allegations of human rights violations.

Party leaders said the move could amount to interference in India's internal affairs. CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury, however, said India's own human rights bodies could visit the state.

‎The UNHRC letter comes days after ‎Pakistan PM‎ Nawaz Sharif wrote to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, urging efforts to "end the persistent and egregious violation of the basic human rights of the Kashmiri people".

The prime minister ruled out any major concessions in dealing with the protests in Kashmir+ in terms of engagement with Pakistan and also made it amply clear that talks with separatists were not on his to-do list.

Responding to suggestions that a dialogue be initiated, Modi said the government was willing to talk to anyone with an "open mind" and he was keen to normalise the situation, a reference that indicates that the Hurriyat remains off limit. In a firm rebuttal of Pakistan's bid to present itself as an involved party, Modi made the point that Islamabad's own human rights record did not give it such leeway.

Modi also said there was a need to track persons who had fled PoK so that their accounts could be publicised. PoK, he said, was the fourth part of Jammu and Kashmir, along with Ladakh, Jammu and the valley. "Foreign ministry should take initiatives to develop contact with citizens of PoK settled abroad and apprise them about how their family and friends are treated there," Modi said.

Similarly, the violation of human rights in Balochistan+ should be brought to the attention of the global audience, he said.

Modi's tough stance towards Pakistan+ and the desire to engage only moderates and the backing of political parties for measures to ensure security summed up the mood at the meeting where most leaders rejected Islamabad moving the UN human rights commission and pledged to maintain national unity in the face of foreign interference.

Former PM Manmohan Singh, in a brief intervention, called for normalcy and said the Centre should show that it was a caring government while opposition leaders like BJD's Bhartruhari Mahtab said all four parties in J&K, BJP, PDP, NC and Congress, must speak in a united voice. The meeting saw PDP and BJP converging over religious motivation for the violence in Kashmir.

Modi said Pakistan was using fighter jets to kill its own people and held the neighbour responsible for sponsoring terror in Jammu and Kashmir. Briefing the media, home minister Rajnath Singh and finance minister Arun Jaitlely said the PM did not mince words on Pakistan and the situation in Balochistan and PoK.
"Pakistan forgets killing its own people by fighter planes. Time has come for Pakistan to explain to the world community about excesses committed in PoK and Balochistan," Modi said at the meeting which had leaders from the entire political spectrum.

Gilgit-Baltistan locals protest against arrest of 500 men by Pakistani security forces

Angry protesters took out a march and chanted anti-Pakistan slogans after security forces arrested the men for asking the Pakistani Army to vacate Gilgit's soil.

Locals today took to streets in Pakistan occupied Gilgit-Baltistan region to protest against the imprisonment of over 500 young men by security forces.

Our moral responsibility to stand by our brothers in PoK: Jitendra Singh

MoS PMO Jitendra Singh further said that the actual culmination of 'Tiranga yatra' will be in Kotli, Muzaffarabad "when we succeed in hoisting the tricolour of India in PoK".

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh on Saturday said it’s our moral and national responsibility to stand by our brothers in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) and also Gilgit-Baltistan, according to reports in ANI.

“At the same time, to draw attention of the world to the kind of human rights violation that is taking place in that region,” added Singh.

Singh further said that the actual culmination of ‘Tiranga yatra’ will be in Kotli, Muzaffarabad “when we succeed in hoisting the tricolour of India in PoK”.

Meanwhile, in a statement given to ANI, Balochistan activist Hammal Haider Baloch on Saturday said, “We welcome PM Modi’s statement to support freedom movement of Balochistan. This is the first time ever that an Indian PM has expressed his wish to support Baloch people, very crucial decision.”
“Baloch people share common interest with India, we are secular and believe in democratic principles. Pak has never complied with international rules, they’re killing Baloch people,” added Baloch.

Another activist, Naila Baloch, said, “We people of Balochistan are suffering, we hope that you (PM Modi) raise this issue in UN session in September.”

Singh’s comments come a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated at the all-party meeting convened on Friday that Jammu and Kashmir is not only an issue of our territorial integrity but it also defines our nationalism. “When we talk about Jammu and Kashmir, we should talk about all four parts of the state — Jammu, Kashmir valley, Ladakh and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK),” PM Modi had said.

In his concluding remarks at the meeting, PM Modi sent across a stern message to Pakistan when he said, ““Pakistan forgets that it rains bombs from fighter planes on citizens of its country. Time has now come that Pakistan will have to answer to the world about the atrocities being committed on people in Balochistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.”

Welcome PM Narendra Modi’s statement to support freedom movement of Balochistan: Baloch Activist

Balochistan activist Naila Baloch has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remark that Pakistan will have to answer to the world about the atrocities being committed on people in Balochistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Naila Baloch told ANI that the people of Balochistan are suffering and they hope Prime Minister Narendra Modi will raise this issue in UN session in September.

“We people of Balochistan, Pakistan and PoK thank you (PM Modi) for your support,” she said.

Naila Baloch reacted to PM Modi’s strong message to Pakistan at an all-party meeting convened on Friday indicting it for fomenting terror in the Valley and reminding it of its “atrocities” in Balochistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

“Pakistan forgets that it rains bombs from fighter planes on citizens of its country,” the Prime Minister said in his concluding remarks at an all-party meeting to discuss the flare-up in Kashmir in the wake of the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen’s Burhan Wani.

He said, “Time has now come that Pakistan will have to answer to the world about the atrocities being committed on people in Balochistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.”
Another Balochistan Activist Hammal Haider Baloch said, “We welcome PM Modi’s statement to support freedom movement of Balochistan”.

He further said, “This is the first time ever that an Indian PM has expressed his wish to support Baloch people, and this is a very crucial decision taken by Indian government.

Hammal Baloch said that Baloch people share common interest with India, we are secular and believe in democratic principles, adding that Pakistan has never complied with international rules, they’re killing Baloch people. It is time for the world to come forward and support us, said Hammal.

Hammal Haidar Baloch said that Pakistan is butchering Sindhi political activists & supporting religious groups which are threat for the world.

The Balochistan conflict: 10 key points

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech said he was grateful to the people of Balochistan, Gilgit and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, for thanking him for his criticism of the "atrocities" committed by Pakistan in Balochistan and PoK. While the PM’s comments may or may not signify a fundamental shift in India's Pakistan policy, his decision to raise the stakes on Kashmir by highlighting Pakistan's own failings in Balochistan is going down well with India's strategic community. Baloch Republican Party founder Brahamdagh Bugti on Sunday asked India to help "helpless" Balochs in the same way that it once helped Bangladesh.

Here are 10 key points that will help you understand the Balochistan conflict better.

                        1. The annexation of Kalat

Balochistan has witnessed regular insurgencies since Pakistan annexed the autonomous Baloch state of Kalat in 1948. The state is now divided between Pakistan and Iran. The capital of the Pakistani province of Balochistan is Quetta.

                        2. Multiple insurgencies

The Pakistan government has waged military campaigns against Baloch insurgencies in 1948, 1958-59, 1962-63, and 1973-77. The most recent conflict began in the early 2000s.

                        3. A separate state

There have been calls in Balochistan for a separate state independent from Pakistan. Naela Qadri Baloch has even appealed to the Indian government, asking it to intervene and liberate Balochistan from Pakistan.

                        4. A vision for an independent Balochistan

She has told TOI that an independent Balochistan would be "nuclear free, terror-free, secular, democratic, pluralistic," and "gender-balanced"

                        5. Armed separatist groups

There are a number of armed separatist groups demanding independence from Pakistan. Prominent groups include the Balochistan Liberation Army and Lashkar-e-Balochistan.

                        6. Systematic repression and marginalization

The Pakistan government is accused of engaging in systematic repression and marginalization of Balochs. Islamabad has reportedly detained thousands of Baloch nationalists, denied Balochs positions in government institutions and the military, assassinated democratic Baloch leaders, funded religious schools to fuel religious radicalization, and backed the Taliban in general elections to counter democratic Baloch leaders.

                        7. Curbing press freedom

The Pakistan government is also accused of imposing extraordinary restrictions on press freedom. It has reportedly prevented the international media from reporting from conflict zones. In addition, foreign journalists working in the region have reportedly been physically assaulted by intelligence agents, or deported from Pakistan.

                        8. 'Kill-and-dump' policy

In May this year, Naela Qadri Baloch told TOI that Pakistan had "imposed" war on Balochistan, and that its human rights violations in the region had "reached the level of genocide." Describing what she called a "kill-and-dump" policy, the activist said the Pakistan Army killed Balochs indiscriminately, abducted women and took them to rape cells, and had official torture cells. "They are using rape and dishonour as an instrument to crush a nation," she said.

                        9. Creating terror groups

Naela Qadri Baloch also alleged that Pakistan had created local al-Qaida and ISIS groups in the region, in the same way that it had once created al-Shams and al-Badr in Bangladesh.

                        10. Siphoning resources

Pakistan is accused of siphoning Balochistan's energy resources away from their rightful beneficiaries. While Pakistan gets most of its energy from Balochistan's natural gas reserves, Punjab rather than Balochistan benefits from this fuel source.

An Indian Army Major's open letter to Burhan Wani - Dear Departed,

Ever since you were terminated in a forces-led operation in the Valley, 23 people have died. I don’t know why they died. The majority were possibly overcome with grief and fury and wanted to avenge your death. That did not happen, for obvious reasons. A policeman was thrown along with his vehicle into a river and he drowned. I grieve with your family and with the families of all those who lost their lives. Despicable though you may have been, I cannot find it in my heart to blame your family.

You could have been an engineer, a doctor, an archeologist or a software programmer but your fate drew you to the seductive world of social media, with its instant celebrity hood and all encompassing fame. You posted pictures on the internet with your “brothers”, all you fine young Rambos holding assault rifles and radio sets. It was right out of Hollywood. Your rifle’s fire selector switch was set to “safe” and your weapon rested on your shoulder. I know it’s too late to advise you on such matters, but NEVER do that in an operational area.

The day you started with your social media blitzkrieg, you were a dead man. You encouraged young men of Kashmir to kill Indian soldiers, all from behind the safety of your Facebook account. Your female fan following was delirious. You were a social media rage. Unknown to you, there was probably some nerd with a laptop sitting in HQ XV Corps, tracking you 24/7. You died when you were 22. Had you survived this operation, you would have died when you were 23. Just a different date on the calendar, that’s all. The intensity of violence and the result would have been the same.

I wish we had met and I could have explained to you (before killing you) that the old men of the Hurriyat Conference are like leech. They feed on the blood of men. They send young Kashmiris to face the Indian Army. What sort of a war is this, where lambs are sent to fight lions?

I would have shown you the sheer duplicity of the Hurriyat, with their sons living abroad, pursuing professions other than jihad. Name one relative of Syed Ali Geelani, the head of the Hurriyat Conference, who is fighting the so-called Indian “occupation”? His son Nayeem Geelani is a doctor in Rawalpindi, and lives under the patronage of the Pakistani ISI. Zahoor, his second son, lives in South Delhi. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s sister Rabia is a doctor in the US. Mariyam Andrabi, sister of head of the radical Dukhtran-e-Millat, Asiya Andrabi, along with her family lives in Malaysia. Every Kashmiri separatist leader’s daughter or son is rich and safe, outside Kashmir. Jihad is for other people’s sons.

And your parent’s son is dead. Dead from a 7.62 mm full metal jacket round to the head.

Kashmir’s young and restless blame the security forces for killing them. But they never question the Hurriyat. No one asks Syed Ali Geelani why Burhan Wani is not from his family.

Pakistani media was ecstatic when Kashmiris celebrated Eid this year along with Pakistan and not with the rest of India. This was reported as a blow to the unity of India. This is the first time in the 1400 year history of Islam that Eid was declared, not by witnessing the Shawwal moon, but by looking towards Pakistan. Well done.

The Hurriyat has nothing to do with Kashmiris. This unrest, this bloodshed is just another business. If not, I would like to see the list of martyrs from the Hurriyat leadership’s families.

The Hurriyat knows too well that Kashmir has fallen off the map of the world’s attention. No one cares and everyone knows that it is an artificially manufactured conflict. The Kashmir dispute exists because it is an inexpensive way for Pakistan to keep Indian forces bogged down in the valley.

You were a terrorist. You chose to wage war against India. Like for all other such perpetrators in the past, it didn’t go too well for you. When you choose to fight against the Indian Army, know this; THEY WILL KILL YOU.

Your supporters now want blood. So be it.

                              Cheers!
