"They control several strategic points in Istanbul. Given the scale of the operation, it is difficult to imagine they will stop short of prevailing," the source adds.

The revolt of the military in Turkey organized Colonel Muharrem Kos. "Anatolia" news agency reported.

According to the agency, until recently, he served as a legal advisor of the Turkish armed forces, but was fired.

Also, "Anatolia" gives the names of the other organizers of Colonel Mehmet Oguz Akkus, Major and Lieutenant Colonel Agin Ercan Dogan Uysal.

On what part took part in the rebellion, it is not known. During the night on the buildings attacked helicopters to Ankara. It was also reported that the rebels who landed from a helicopter, took over the building broadcaster CNN Turk.

Well, so much for EU Intel.

Though, this news is sourced from Turkish state apparatus that would benefit greatly from associating the coup with Gulenists.

Guy in Ankara on CNN live via Skype says aircraft have been flying all night. Did not see bomb explosion at Parliament but has seen other pictures proclaiming it. Many bomb explosions in Ankara. People went around on megaphones all night calling for people to come into the streets to show support for Erdogan, and says there's going to be very large casualty numbers.

Could be Erdogan's people are comfortably in control of Istanbul which is the media capital of the country, but there seems to be a larger fight taking place in Ankara, the seat of government.

Folks, that's was it.Everyone and his dog was expecting a coup for years.Should have been done long ago with Generals in charge.

This was likely controlled a good deal by the MIT.Erdogan going on holliday. That may have seemed a good time to start the putsch, but the mofo should have been killed outright. Supposedly bombing of his hotel, conveniently after he left.WTF??His security detail MUST have known.Him flying all over the place with no attempt to shoot him down.

Due to the complexity, the leaders lost C2 of the units and op last night and that was it.Erdogan loyalists at medium and low level were clearly taken by surprise, even if the big bosses were probably only surprised by the timing of action(if even that).

At least they did not failed on July 20th.Really tragic failure, which will have tragic consequences for Turkish people and everyone in the area.

We'll have to fight Turkey in 15 years at most.

Was this "Valkyrie" circa 2016? A movie will be made. The only question is whether Tom Cruise will play the defeated hero, and whether Disney will pick up the story. Erdogan doesn't sway Disney corporate the way Xi Jinping's godlike power of censorship over Hollywood blockbuster productions does, so I vote Tom.

Turkish coup quashed, over 190 reported killed in clashes

Dracula, coup over in 1 night? It seems staged for more power consolidation. Pics I saw shows that local police de-arming the soldiers.

Sarcasm? Why would US do this to a NATO ally?

                                - helicopter with coup members has landed in Greece, requesting asylum; Turkey has demanded extradition
                                - supposedly the main naval base in Gölcük (southeast of Istanbul) has been attacked by pro-coup soldiers, head of navy captured, and a frigate seized [according to Greek Mil]
                                - rumours are pro-AKP gangs... err, civilians in support of the government... are lynching captured soldiers
                                - Iran has begun evacuating its citizens from Turkey as well as denying that it has shifted air force units to the northwestern border area
