Here's a recent debate between left and right, well worth a watch

      • A collection of essays and blogs

You'll notice none of them are American: That's because you have neither left or right wing contemporary thinkers, your left is still stuck with Alinsky and your right with Rand.

Edit to add: You do have some very good right wing proto-commentators. David Thompson collects them

Please forgive the disjointed posts, the forum won't let me link to more than 2 sites per post, sometimes not at all to some sites

        • That's a question better left to the American bible belt!
Nope, it's best asked of the Democrat party's most avid supporters

While the U.S. is generally considered a highly religious nation, African-Americans are markedly more religious on a variety of measures than the U.S. population as a whole, including level of affiliation with a religion, attendance at religious services, frequency of prayer and religion’s importance in life. Compared with other racial and ethnic groups, African-Americans are among the most likely to report a formal religious affiliation, with fully 87% of African-Americans describing themselves as belonging to one religious group or another, according to the U.S. Religious Landscape Survey, conducted in 2007 by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life. Latinos also report affiliating with a religion at a similarly high rate of 85%; among the public overall, 83% are affiliated with a religion.

Can totalitarians not be socialists or capitalists?
So what are Assad's political and economic views?

Everyone believes they did their duty.Such things were long in the making and each case of the thousands involved meant a deep personal struggle.

Problem is everyone saw the soldiers humiliated and killed. That, without doubt, left a scar in every officer's soul.Another, bigger coup, maybe even civil war was fomented.

            • A Turkish civil war would be interesting to say the least. Turkey is surrounded with countries that have a multi generational murder boner due to Turkeys treatment of them over the last few centuries. I see more than a few cheeky land grabs if the Turkish nation starts tearing itself apart.

Istanbul/Constantinople, Kurdistan, Aegean Islands, Cyprus, lots of pissed off Greeks, Serbian, Bulgarians, Russians, Armenians, Kurds, Syrians, Iranians etc.

Let's see how this pans out.

              • For this reason I only see it as a possibility, not probability.Turks are in general very patriotic and the army more so.They have one of the longest tradition of statehood in the ME.Losing the country is worse than wearing veil and yelling Allah Ekber. While conquering Syria or N Iraq.
They know they're surrounded by old and new foes and they know any such show will invite ruin. The Turkish army as a whole was divided and even more now.But if I were to speculate,I'd say the oath to the country will trump the allegiance to the secular ideals,if the country goes full retard.

                But anything can happen.

A foreign threat of landgrab or of a country dissolving into smaller parts would be a unifier and the poor buggers will end up smashed on the windows. Like bugs.

                              Is this a joke?

CNN has this - If it reintroduces the death penalty, it won't be joining the European Union, according to EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.
