Yes, they were. In a one day battle, they lost an entire regiment. The Chinese had improved and the Vietnamese deteriorated. The fact that they could only muster one single regiment after a six month occupation of Vietnamese hills by the PLA said how far they've fallened.

However, the Chinese reference could be the reference the two incidents in which Chinese and Vietnamese naval vessels exchanged fire, 1974 and 1988, both times, the Vietnamese came up short.

            1974 was Sino-South Vietnam, wasn't it?

i was under the impression that both militaries had deteriorated since 1979 but it was just the vietnamese had deteriorated more. the 1980s weren't kind to the PLA.
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov

They were better than they were in 1979 if only because they started putting competent officers in charge and started firing/retiring incompetent ones.

In the 2nd Sino-Vietnam War, PLA officers were combat veterans, reading the Vietnamese right on more than one occasion. The PLA never made contact with the Vietnamese regiment they destroyed. They guess the time and place of the infiltration and just decided to rain steel down. It was only after that they sent out patrols that they discovered Vietnamese bodies.

And it was years after that they learned they killed an entire regiment and that was because Hanoi published it.

The Philippines v. China arbitration case and the furor over its verdict constitute a significant development that could influence the prospects for future rivalry or cooperation in the Western Pacific. This article closely examines the viewpoints of Chinese leaders and knowledgeable observers on the arbitration case. Authoritative sources consistently indicate that China rejects the arbitration and views its verdict as detrimental to vital Chinese interests, regional stability, and international legal order. China’s categorical rejection speaks to the fundamental Sino-Western division over the application of international agreements to sovereignty issues and indicates that any effort by the US or other powers to pressure Beijing will prove futile and most likely exacerbate existing tensions in the South China Sea.

Love the historical context for why the area belongs to them. Wonder why they hesitate to claim America based on the historical context that they might have possibly been here 3,000 years ago before any European.

An idiotic article that it even admits in the end that it said absolutely nothing.

This is the internet disease at work. All these websites are putting up clickbaiting titles even when there's nothing new.
