Who were they? There have been suggestions that they were 'Dorians' or that either (or both) they were the 'Sea Peoples' mentioned as attacking Egypt during the reigns of Ramesses ll and lll.

News reports around here on the same excavation - which seem to be translated versions of the one below - try to link them to Mycenae, although there's a few centuries inbetween; possibly a remnant cut off from Greece after the Dorians and Sea People spread out and Mycenae fell. Given that Hittite culture despite its fall similarly survived through splintered city states to about the 7th century BC as well. Egypt had withdrawn from the area in the 13th century BC already, leaving ample room for such settling from Greece.

My reading of history was that the sea people were actually the phoenicians - ie modern day israel, lebanon etc... around that crescent

        however:

You were much missed for your remarks like the one above. Hope everything is fine at your end.

My guess was the 'Sea Peoples' were more of a general migratory movement following the late Bronze Age 'collapse' - the end of Mycenaean Hellas being only one part of the larger picture.
