"The keynote to everything to be simplicity."

very interesting read. I always thought Montgomery to be a plan-everything-down-to-the-last-detail type of guy, but I suppose not always.
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov

the Normandy operation was Planned , from the preliminaries to the landing and fighting advance ,

in Fact I don't believe Monty had anything much to do about the beach landing itself , that was a very technical , very complex undertaking handled by specialists
he was the overall commander on the field during the landing but his job was to secure the beachheads , take Caen and other objectives inland with the troops he had available

The Allies planned to launch the invasion on 1 May 1944.[22] The initial draft of the plan was accepted at the Quebec Conference in August 1943. General Dwight D. Eisenhower was appointed commander of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF).[26] General Bernard Montgomery was named as commander of the 21st Army Group,

True , but Monty was nominated as commander on the spot until Eisenhower got physically present on the continent ,
much to the disgust of Bradley and Collins , not to mention Patton , they beseeched Ike to bring his headquarter over
and resume direct command , which happened a couple of weeks later .
it was deemed ( Rightly ) to be a waste of shipping , a temporary source of disruption and an unnecessary bother to move his full staff to command a corps sized deployment

Ike came a couple of times on day visit , mostly to chill his irate generals , but his administration was in Britain

Dug a bit and surprise , surprise , the US 12th army group under Bradley was established 14 July in London

during the landing the US divisions of 1th Army were under the authority of Monty 21th army group
that created a fair bit of bile .
Since the landing zone would have been under enemy fire for a while , moving hundred of SHAEF pen-pushers and their gear would simply be a waste of time at best ,
a possible disaster at worst .
