  • 'History Created' Says PM After India, Iran, Afghan Sign Trade Corridor Pact

TEHRAN: 'History is being created,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Tehran today as Iran, India and Afghanistan signed a tripartite agreement to turn the Chabahar port into a transit hub bypassing Pakistan.

Here are the top 10 developments in this big story:

The accord, which calls for joint investments, will significantly boost the role of the under-tapped port of Chabahar connecting Iran through India and Afghanistan to central Asia.

Earlier, India and Iran signed a deal to develop the port, which is in the Gulf of Oman on Iran's southern coast. The deal was described as a "game-changer" by both sides.

PM Modi said India will open a $500-million line of credit to develop Chabahar into a regional trading hub. This is the first foreign port in which India is involved to this extent.

The port will help India bypass Pakistan to transport goods to Afghanistan and central Asia using a sea-land route.

Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, who is also in Tehran, claims that the distance from Mumbai to Delhi is greater than that between Chabahar and Gujarat's Kandla port.

Pakistan does not allow India to send goods through its territory to Afghanistan and has only recently begun to allow a trickle of Afghan exports to cross through to India.

Besides developing the port, India will also help build a 500-km railway line between Chabahar and Zahedan.

India's move is also being seen as a balance to China's influence in Pakistan. India wants a counter to Pakistan's Gwadar port, which was built with Chinese assistance and is 72 km from Chabahar.

PM Modi's visit to the oil-rich nation comes four months after the sanctions on Iran were lifted and the international community is re-engaging with the nation.

The volume of trade between the two countries over the past nine months reached $9 billion, according to Iran's official IRNA news agency.

Never knew the Iranian politicians resemble so close to our own politicians. ;-)

Hope their world views do the same.

How? Iran-Afghanistan don't share a border with India.

Sure they do, it's strip of land called Pakistan. The trade route is all waterborne.

The planned railway is a lot more interesting in my opinion. At Zahedan it would connect to the recently inaugurated link from Bam and Kerman, effectively connecting the Iranian national railroad network to an Indian Ocean port. The only other railroad-connected port outside the Shat-el-Arab is Bandar Abbas. On a wider bases this adresses a possible bottleneck in India-to-Russia and India-to-Central-Asia longhaul freight (i.e. in the North-South Transport Corridor signed about 15 years ago), especially for times of tension given Bandar Abbas' location at the Strait of Hormuz.

              Interesting developments.

India main objective behind this port is to have access to Afghanistan as otherwise India trade with the rest of central asia is negligible.

How can you have access to Afghanistan when Afghans themselves don't have access to Afghanistan?

They do have access to Afghanistan through Pakistan,Iran and Tajikistan.Since Pakistan doesn't allow Indian export to Afghanistan through its land,So this is the alternative.

Yes this is one of the factor but india concern is not just trade with Afghanistan but to counter Pakistan in Afghanistan and for that they need land access to Afghanistan.

Why get directly involved? Pay Iran to screw things up for Pakistan. They have little love for Islamabad and the Taliban and they have a direct interest not to see Afghanistan in Pakistan's hands.

Except that the ANA is a pretty strong warlord, and India has finally shown that it isn't entirely shy of arming them by finally giving them some aerial gunships. Once India's own weapons shortfall gaps fill in, I hope they'd consider it worth the money to pass on some more weapons platforms to the ANA.

The railway would link up to western Afghanistan and Herat, which are by Afghan standards, politically stable. Besides, I disagree that the Chahbahar link is solely for trade with Afghanistan. Central Asia is a much bigger pie than one failed -stan.
