Washington (AFP) - The US Air Force on Friday unveiled the first image of its next-generation bomber that will replace antique B-52s first developed during the Cold War.

The all-black plane has a distinctive, zigzagging shape and a super-low profile that will make it hard to spot on radar, and bears more than a passing resemblance to the Air Force's B-2 bomber, which is also made by Northrop Grumman.

The new stealth bomber has yet to be built, so Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James displayed an artist's rendering at an Orlando event.

She said the plane, previously known as the Long Range Strike Bomber, would be called the B-21 until a new name has been agreed on, and she invited air crews to help.

"This aircraft represents the future for our Airmen, and (their) voice is important to this process," James told the Air Force Association's Air Warfare Symposium.

"The Airman who submits the selected name will help me announce it at the (Air Force Association) conference this fall."

The Pentagon in October announced Northrop as the winner of the contract to build the bomber in a decades-long program that will likely end up costing in excess of $100 billion.

The Air Force wants 100 of the warplanes, which will replace the ageing B-52s and the B-1 bombers that first saw action in the 1980s.

This is basically a glorified B-2. I would like to see what Boeing proposal looked like, it would be interesting to see.

      Whoa whoa whoa...how did it go from B-2 to B-21? Did we skip B-9, B-10, B-15, B-17, and B-18?

All those have already been done by Boeing, Martin and Douglas.

Ok, then we can also do CV6-2, CV12-2 and so forth. Makes sense to me...

Why does the USAF pretend to abide by the tri-service aircraft designation system when it does whatever it wants (ie. F-35, B-21)?

If it's good enough for NCC-1701D, it's good enough for the Navy.

Whats the bet advances in hyper-sonic ramjet/scramjet UAV technology renders this platform obsolete before the end of the production run?
If you are emotionally invested in 'believing' something is true you have lost the ability to tell if it is true.

what's the bet that at the end of the production run if hyper-sonic ramjet/scramjet UAV tech. is that far advanced that you'll have B-21's controlling and commanding them.

Marketing.... just like the proposed first run will be for 21 aircraft......

gotta make it sound all shinny and new and futuristic and all.... especially with McCain all over it now for some reason......

or the exhausts just haven't been 'rendered' yet.....

even more interesting, this blurb from a FoxtrotAlpha article....

"This aircraft is startlingly similar to the original Advanced Technology Bomber (ATB) design, dubbed the High Altitude Penetrator from the early 1980s, before the USAF required the design to be able to penetrate enemy air defenses at low altitudes. As a result of this requirement the fuselage was tweaked a bit and the stealth bomber to be’s empennage had extra chevrons and a “beaver tail” added to it. This aircraft would eventually become the B-2 Spirit."
