      Yes, I indeed am!

Sorry mate, it's been a long while!

I believe when I was more active here, you were absent for quite some time! Now, managing multiple engineering projects gives me little time to post and correspond with old acquaintances resulting in goof ups like these!

Well, it's a field unto itself (the original concept actually originating from ancient India itself); the unwritten law of society. Why humans trade off some of their fundamental rights, rather than be absolutely free (anarchy), to be governed under some sort of an arrangement. Social Contract

Apparently these goons beat up the accused in police custody

EXCLUSIVE: Kanhaiya wet his pants while we beat him up in police custody, say lawyers behind Patiala House assault
A sting operation by India Today has unearthed shocking details on the assault on JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar and journalists, while Kumar was being produced in the Patiala House court on February 15.

An exclusive India Today operation today unearthed shocking details on the assault on JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar and journalists, while Kumar was being produced in the Patiala House court on February 15.
In a sting operation recorded by our cameras, lawyers in Delhi's Patiala House court have owned up to the brazen assault. In the video below, they admit gleefully that Kanhaiya was beaten up even when he was in police custody. None of these lawyers have been arrested.

Funny how Indian students are fighting for free speech rights while American students are trying to restrain free speech.

^ The common student is hardly interested in politics. Most just want to get through college with a degree worthy for the job market.

Majority of the universities(student and management) do not fiddle with politics. Most are stable.

That is mostly true here when dealing with students enrolled in useful topics. Those major in useless subjects such as "ethnic American studies," "underwater basket weaving," "social ecology," and "global warming hysteria" are all about protesting and telling others about their "micro aggression." Our schools are churning out worthless social studies morons with a chip on their shoulders and a load of student loan debt on their backs. Pray your schools don't descend into the piles of socialist garbage that ours turned into.

why have you avoided commenting ?

Look at things critically. Don't form an opinion a priori and then wait for events to confirm it.

There is always some crap or the other happening in the country. See Haryana. Very good timing for a stir, before elections when no party is going to refuse whatever crazy demands some people have and are willing to get them even at gun point.

if lawyers resort to such behaviour you just know they're going to lose :D

That fight has not stopped and will never stop. That this incident has blown up to national levels tells me the patient is in good health. Alive and kicking. always ready to go to the streets for whatever reason. The oppositoin managed to claw its way back into the limelight.

if the govt cracks down on protests like this it comes back in a more virulent manner. Becomes a bigger PITA for them. The same applies for right wing student groups.

No right and wrong, facts, pfft. Perception. That's what its all about. keep tweaking it for effect. Both sides.

If you get a contractor to build you a bathroom, would you allow him to debate the pros/cons of different kitchen cabinets with your gf/wife? Do Indians really need to know about John Locke or Voltaire to avoid going down that road?
The more ideas the better. The best place for liberals is in halls of learning.

Arts has taken a nosedive in favour of hard sciences.

Kids have to learn and see what freedom means and the way to do that is by practicing. Maybe its stupid what they say but they should be allowed to say it.

As far as the sedition business goes, unless it leads to incitment there is no case. That is how the case law has developed. Why they can't use this for speech like in the US i don't know. The foundation is already there. Do away with sedition and modify speech, done.

But no govt wants to remove sedition because its as useful today as it was when the Brits enacted it.

You realize you are talking about the Sovereign, Socialist, Secular and Democratic Republic of India, right? Most of what goes on in American universities is pretty tame compared to the norm in Indian campus politics...

There, fixed it for you. Heck, initially even the Leftist thought so (http://www.openthemagazine.com/artic...last-outpost):

That JNU was not always politicised may come as a surprise to many. “The Left was opposed to the establishment of such a university,” says Batabyal, who has authored a book on the history of JNU. “They felt it was too elitist.” In the initial years after its inception in 1969, student politics hardly went beyond informal discussion.
... until they figured out that this would be a perfect refuge and launchpad for their shenanigans:

The first brush with Left politics came with the violent linguistic agitations and the Naxalite violence that shook academic institutions in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. At the time, JNU provided a safe haven to scholars from universities in the affected states. ‘It was offering space to an intellectual class who would envision academia not as an extension of the state or the government department, but as a habitus of both mind and body,’ writes Batabyal in his book. With the setting up of the School of Social Sciences in 1970, and the School of International Studies, SIS, in 1955 (it was merged with JNU in 1970), the flavour of the university changed perceptibly. The new faculty wore their radical politics on their sleeves. ... From the standpoint of the CPM (i.e: Communist Party of India, Marxist), JNU was like a clean slate where it did not have to fight it out with the likes of the Chhatra Parishad in West Bengal, the National Students’ Union of India in Kerala, the socialists and the RSS in UP and Rajasthan.

Don't get disconnected from ground reality.

                            The left is foolish.

These episodes have ended up plain polarizing the people. Even those kids disinterested in politics have been left abruptly infuriated through gossips and circulations in the social media. It has become a fight between the ordinary vs the fanatic left. The right wing has been affected positively and has checked itself out. Rahul gandhi was quietly told to shut up by mukherjee(INC patriarch) but the left is severely handicapped by its own ideology and too miserable to look back and understand or introspect.
