  • Russian Nuclear Torpedo

It appears the Russians let some technical details slip on their "Status-6" nuclear torpedo/submersible.

There is some debate about whether this represents intentional signaling on behalf the of Russians or if it was a legitimate mistake in showing a shot of the technical document. The fact that Russian sources quickly removed the video seems to indicate a legitimate slip up rather than something along the lines of NORK's style of deliberately leaving things in the background.

A nuclear tipped torpedo is nothing new, but this appears to be more of an autonomous submersible with a large dirty (possibly Cobalt) bomb designed to contaminate a large area rather than just a torpedo with a big explosion. The giant torpedo's range is given as "up to 10,000km" and depth of "up to 1,000m" with a speed of "100 knots".

This appears to be a reaction to maintain strategic deterrence in an environment in which ICBMs may be intercepted by the US in the future.

The fact that their controlled TV channels (3 of them) showed this and that they later admitted to this being a 'mistake' inclines to believe it is a bluff but I am not sure we can afford to count on that and the military must treat it as true just in case and plan accordingly.

Some outlets are saying it's supposed to be 100 megatons.

I think this is the Russians reaponding to 3 things:

      1. compared to us, they are missing the bomber leg of the nuclear triad.

      2. they becoming increasingly nervous about the ability of their ballistic missiles to penetrate future us missile defenses.
      3. the surveillance capabilities we recently demonstrated in Syria.

they want to tell us that they've got options and ideas.

A dirty bomb? The best they can come up with is mass radiation?
In the realm of spirit, seek clarity; in the material world, seek utility.

100 KILOTONS. Warhead is too small for 100 megatons.

BBC and NYT both mentioned 100 Megatons and causing a "radioactive Tsunami", but it wasn't clear whether that was this current design or a concept from back in the 50s:

            http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34797252

Russian military experts told BBC Russian Service:
A warhead of up to 100 megatons could produce a tsunami up to 500m (1,650ft) high, wiping out all living things 1,500km (930 miles) deep inside US territory - Konstantin Sivkov, Russian Geopolitical Academy
Robotic torpedo shown could have other purposes, such as delivering deep-sea equipment or installing surveillance devices. The Russian defence ministry has a special division for deep-sea research - Konstantin Bogdanov, Lenta.ru website
This is no secret for the US, whose military is also working in the area of robotic submersibles for hunting and destroying submarines - Viktor Murakhovsky, reserve colonel, editor of Arsenal of the Fatherland magazine.

First of all, the specifications seem a little outrageous; 100 MEGATONS? The largest thermonuclear device we've ever detonated was 15MT, and that was an accident! 100 knots underwater? Really? Unless it's rocket-propelled, the fastest I've ever heard of was 60-70 knots for a submersible. The depth isn't an issue, 1,000 meters isn't all that deep, but a 10,000 km range also seems a bit absurd; there are some SHIPS that don't have a 10,000 km range!

The kinematic figures seem BS. Since the "UUV" as depicted is half the length of an attack sub, it probably can carry a pretty big warhead.
