Indian mob kills farmer rumored to have eaten beef

    Wednesday, 30 Sep 2015 | 10:11 PM ETFinancial Times

A Muslim farmworker has been dragged from his home in an Indian village and beaten to death by an angry mob after rumours were spread that his family had been eating beef and storing the meat in their home.

The attack — which occurred late on Monday in a community just 45km from New Delhi and left the man's 22-year-old son critically injured — is the latest in a series of vigilante attacks against people in India suspected of involvement in the transport and slaughter of cattle.

It reflects the increasingly febrile environment over cows in India, where many devout Hindus revere the animals as near-deities but religious minorities such as Muslims and Christians treat beef as a source of inexpensive protein.

Cow slaughter has always been a sensitive and sometimes incendiary issue, and has sometimes triggered communal conflagrations. Many Indian states have bans on killing the animals, and mob attacks on those suspected of killing cows are not unknown.

But under the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has himself bemoaned India's surging meat exports, rhetoric over the need for stronger protection of cows has grown more heated.

Hindu rightwing groups affiliated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata party have called for a national ban on slaughtering cows. In Maharashtra, a ban on cow slaughter took effect earlier this year, while the BJP government in Rajasthan has vowed to widen its prohibition on killing cows, with tough new rules that bar their transport for slaughter and permit the impounding of trucks used in the trade.

"There has been a bit of rallying around this discourse of how Muslims and Christians kills cows, and it's an emotive issue because pious Hindus do worship them," says Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director of Human Rights Watch. "It's dangerous rhetoric which can spiral into violence."

Family members of Mohammad Akhlaq, the man killed this week in Dadri, said their father was dragged from their home and stoned by the mob at around 10pm on Monday, after calls from a temple loudspeaker urged local residents to gather at the family's home and claimed they had slaughtered a calf, which the family denied.

The attack came just days after the Eid festival, when many Muslims slaughter goats or other animals for a celebratory feast. But tensions over cows are multiplying.

In late July, 10 people were seriously injured in a clash in north-east Delhi, after a mob attacked men for allegedly transporting cow hides. In southern India, rightwing Hindu groups have attacked trucks carrying cows from states where cow slaughter is banned to Kerala, where it is legal.

Ms Ganguly said this week's attack reflected a wider trend towards vigilante justice in India, where the criminal justice system is seen to be largely ineffective.

"The fact that this righteous mob believes it has the privilege of taking the law in its own hands is something that needs to be addressed by an effective criminal justice system," she said. "The fact that mobs are expressing their moral outrage over something, and they feel justified in taking this kind of action, is a crisis in the public faith over the rule of law."

Yes this has been all over indian domestic media.
The state govt just said some usual blather on how the case is ongoing, the police are focusing on testing the meat to see if its beef and the central govt is keeping silent.
The number of various incidents is slowly but surely climbing.
Even in a secessionist islamic state like J&K beef has been banned http://indianexpress.com/article/ind...-begins-today/.
The BJP's method is now becoming obvious. Slowly create pressure until this becomes a new normal.
I think i will have to seriously come up with some way to get a job out of india

        The plot thickens

Dadri Lynching: UP Homeguard spread beef rumour to instigate attack on father and son, says police

Police have detained an Uttar Pradesh Homeguards constable who, they say, is a key conspirator behind the mob attack in Bisara village, Dadri, on Monday in which Mohammad Akhlaq, 50, was beaten to death and his son, Danish, 22, seriously injured.

The Homeguard who has been detained has been identified as Vinay, a resident of Bisara who was posted at the Jarcha police station. According to the police, Vinay, said to be in his late twenties, forced the temple priest to make the announcement about a Muslim family storing and consuming beef.

Meanwhile, the Dadri police on Saturday arrested two more suspects, Vishal Rana and Shivam Rana, taking the total number of arrests to eight. The two men, who are cousins, allegedly claimed to have seen the remains of a slaughtered cow and informed Vinay. They are reported to have accompanied Vinay to the temple. The duo had fled Bisara after the incident, and were found hiding in a village nearby. Police sources identified Vishal’s father, Sanjay Rana, as a local BJP leader.

According to a senior police officer, Vinay had a personal dispute with Akhlaq earlier and had

been instigating a group of youths to attack his family, alleging that they were involved in cow slaughter.

Another senior officer said Vinay was being questioned on the motive behind the attack, and would be arrested after his confession.

When contacted, Chandra Mohan Mishra, district Homeguards commandant, confirmed that Vinay was a Homeguards constable posted in Jarcha. Mishra said the records showed that Vinay was absent from duty on September 27-29. He said the Homeguards company commander had told him that police had detained Vinay on Thursday.

According to the police, on September 28, Vinay, accompanied by Vishal and Shivam, arrived at the village temple at night, just as the priest, Sukhdas Mahatma, was closing the door. Vinay allegedly asked the priest to announce that a cow had been slaughtered in the village and everyone should assemble near the temple.

The priest is reported to have refused to make the announcement, but Vinay, who was in uniform, allegedly threatened him. The announcement was then made.
When the villagers gathered at the temple, Vinay reportedly addressed the crowd and told them that Akhlaq had killed a cow and he should be taught a lesson. A group of youths were reportedly sent to Akhlaq’s house for a recce, to check that he and his son were present there.

The mob, allegedly led by Vinay, then stormed the house and attacked Akhlaq and his family.

Police sources said Vinay had initially told officials that he was an eyewitness to the incident. He later became a suspect when he tried to mislead the police about Akhlaq supplying beef and his connection with cattle smugglers.

Inspector General, Meerut Zone, Alok Sharma said the autopsy report had confirmed the cause of Akhlaq’s death as ante-mortem injuries.

Meanwhile, speaking to The Sunday Express, Sanjay Rana demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.

“A CBI inquiry should be conducted so that the actual culprits are punished. A case of cow slaughter against the deceased and his family should also be registered,” he said.

Rana said Shivam is his brother’s son, and both the youths are 20 years old. While Vishal works at a factory in Okhla, Shivam is pursuing B. Pharma at Santosh Medical College, he said.

“My children are innocent. Vishal had to abandon his studies after Class XII because he met with an accident two years ago and a lot of money was spent on his treatment,” he said.
Beef or no beef murder is murder.

Indian population has been turning non-passive over the last 20 years. Various sensitization programs and public service messages carried by right wing and animal rights orgs have made the indian population realize that farmers have been selling their old livestock to butchers. The general population still does not know that besides muslims, the christians eat beef too.

People in closed urban communities have got a wrong impression about their countrymen and its moral compass. Its a very sensitive subject and should best be avoided.

And you don't know that Hindus eat beef too. I do. And many others.

Clearly the holiness of the cow is lost on you...

Let the Indian Cultural Ministry educate you:

"The attack was triggered by sudden outrage over cow slaughter, the minister said. “It was momentary. On beef… our soul starts shaking.. You can kill other animals, mutton, and people don’t (react)… (but) when you name cow… We have linked the cow with our mother” -Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Culture and Tourism

How? Non-vegetarians are rising in numbers and would continue to rise due to the economic progress and rising disposable income. Vegetarians and their ilk would be left behind. Many among your own South Indians eat meat. What did they lose?

Then I don't understand your earlier post.

Anyway, Markandey Katju said - "Cow is just an animal and an animal cannot be anyone’s mother, if I like to eat beef then what’s harm in it, even people worldwide consume beef, if I like to too eat then who can stop me…" during a function at Banaras Hindu University.

He also said this - Sweep away all feudal filth
I have often been asked by patriotic people, particularly the youth, what contribution they can make for India's upliftment from its present miserable plight.
My answer is : help to sweep away all feudal filth, in the form of feudal and backward ideas and practices which have accumulated over the centuries, and are acting as shackles on our progress.
Our national aim must be to abolish poverty, unemployment, malnourishment, lack of healthcare and good education, etc and make India a powerful, modern, highly industrialized country with its people enjoying a high standard of living
For achieving this end a powerful cultural struggle must be launched by our patriotic, modern minded intelligentsia, who are the eyes of society, and without whom society is blind.
What must you therefore do ? You must patiently spread scientific and rational thinking among the masses and attack feudal backward ideas and practices.
In particular I recommend the following :
                              1. Attack the caste system which is still strongly entrenched in the minds of most of our people, and which is a curse on our nation. The youth should go in for inter caste and inter religious marriages, in particular marriages between dalits and non dalits, despite objections and threats by your parents, relatives and caste members and caste panchayats.
                              2. While strongly upholding freedom of religion and secularism, tell people that all religions are superstitions, and the truth lies in science, which is constantly developing.
                              3. Criticize burqa and oral talaq, which are feudal backward practices and support complete equality between men and women. Condemn female foeticide as a barbaric practice
                              4. Criticize belief in astrology, which is pure superstition and humbug.
                              5. Criticize and expose babas who are hoodwinking the public.
6.Support the right to eat what one likes, including beef. Most of the world eats beef, so surely they are not wicked people. If some people say it is against Hindu culture explain to them that while there are many good things in our culture, there is much filth in it too, e.g. caste system.
                              7. Expose the present politicians in India who are mostly selfish rogues and rascals who have looted the country and have no genuine love for it, and run politics on the basis of caste and religion
