          'Akhlaq attacked on 1st floor'
DADRI: After a week of investigation, questioning suspects and eyewitnesses and gathering evidence, including murder weapons, police have been able to reconstruct events of the night of September 28 when Mohammad Akhlaq, a handyman, was lynched by a mob in Bisada village of Dadri, merely on speculation that he had slaughtered a cow.

Eight of the 10 men named in the FIR have been arrested and a manhunt is on for the remaining two, Saurabh Singh and Rupendra Kumar. Police have found three lathis, an iron rod and some shoes at the murder site as well as the brick with which someone in the mob dealt Akhlaq a fatal blow.

According to Akhlaq's autopsy report, he had ante-mortem injuries and haemorrhaged from the blow to his head. Police said Akhlaq had a skull fracture, which proved he was hit with a brick. "There were blood stains on the brick," a senior police officer said. The brick has been sent for a forensic analysis.

An investigator said Akhlaq was attacked around 10.30 pm on September 28. " After an announcement from the temple that Akhlaq had beef in his house, some people gathered near his house and whipped up afrenzy. A mob then barged into Akhlaq's house. They first checked the refrigerator on the ground floor. They were look ing for cow meat. When they did not find anything there, they grabbed Akhlaq and dragged him up to the first floor, where Danish (Akhlaq's son) was studying. They checked another refrigerator there. There was meat in that fridge. They took that as confirmation of their suspicion that it was indeed beef," the investigator said.

"There were some bricks under a bed to support it. One of the men took a brick and landed a blow on Akhlaq's head. When Danish tried to stop them, he was beaten up too. The men dragged an unconscious Akhlaq down the stairs and out of the house, to an alley," the investigator added.

In the meantime, Akhlaq's In the meantime, Akhlaq's family and some neighbours made frantic calls to the cops and others for help. Police said a total of five calls were made between 10.28 pm and 10.38 pm.

"The first police team reached the spot at 10.50pm. The killers left Akhlaq's body on the road and fled when they heard the cops coming," the investigator said.

According to a preliminary investigation, Vishal, son of local BJP functionary Suresh Rana, Shivam Bhati, Saurabh and Rupender were among the first to enter Akhlaq's house. Some villagers have told police a child had seen Akhlaq throwing meat in a polythene bag near a power transformer. The boy told others and the word spread.

Vishal, Shivam, Saurabh and Rupender were the ones who went to the temple and asked the priest to announce on the loudspeaker that Akhlaq had killed a calf, said the investigator. "They also asked villagers to gather outside Akhlaq's home," he added.

Vishal works with an advertising company while Shivam s studying. They don't have a criminal background. All the accused have admitted to their presence at the scene, po ice said.

The 10 men named in the FIR are Saurabh Singh, Gaurav Singh, Sandeep Sisodia, Rupendra Kumar, Vivek Singh, Sri Om, Hari Om, Vishal Sisodia, Sachin Singh and Shivam Bhati.

The Unmaking of India: Why I am Returning My Sahitya Akademi Award

In a recent lecture, India’s Vice-President, Dr. Hamid Ansari, found it necessary to remind us that India’s Constitution promises all Indians “liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship.”

The right to dissent is an integral part of this Constitutional guarantee. He found it necessary to do so because India’s culture of diversity and debate is now under vicious assault.

Rationalists who question superstition, anyone who questions any aspect of the ugly and dangerous distortion of Hinduism known as Hindutva – whether in the intellectual or artistic sphere, or whether in terms of food habits and lifestyle – are being marginalised, persecuted, or murdered.

A distinguished Kannada writer and Sahitya Akademi Award winner, M.M. Kalburgi, and two Maharashtrians, Narendra Dhabolkar and Govind Pansare, both anti-superstition activists, have all been killed by gun-toting motor-cyclists. Other dissenters have been warned they are next in line. Most recently, a village blacksmith, Mohammed Akhlaq, was dragged out of his home in Bisara village outside Delhi, and brutally lynched, on the supposed suspicion that beef was cooked in his home.

In all these cases, justice drags its feet. The Prime Minister remains silent about this reign of terror. We must assume he dare not alienate evil-doers who support his ideology.

It is a matter of sorrow that the Sahitya Akademi remains silent. The Akademis were set up as guardians of the creative imagination, and promoters of its finest products in art and literature, music and theatre.

In protest against Kalburgi’s murder, a Hindi writer, Uday Prakash, has returned his Sahitya Akademi Award. Six Kannada writers have returned their Awards to the Kannada Sahitya Parishat.

In memory of the Indians who have been murdered, in support of all Indians who uphold the right to dissent, and of all dissenters who now live in fear and uncertainty, I am returning my Sahitya Akademi Award.

                Nayantara Sahgal,
                Dehra Dun, October 6, 2015

I am not disputing any of that, but they have been proven wrong. Have you ever seen religion being proven wrong and accepting that? Also, scientific theories become theories only after they satisfy experiements and observations. Else they stay as hypotheses, regardless of who comes up with them. It does not matter how many youtube videos you dig up, this fact does not change.

Yeesh, are we still having this tired old debate? Religion and science are both human constructs, and will be used by humans to their own ends. They are neither inherently good nor bad.

True, but one of the two is a lot less scrutinisable and accountable than the other.

That's bullshit. No one who has ever fought for religion or under the guise of religion has ever forsaken it. They blame themselves when they lose, yet exalt their chosen deity's name when they win.

As an aside, there have been a number of double blind, scientifically rigorous experiments conducted on the efficacy of intercessory prayers. Needless to say, they all showed that prayers had no statistically significant effort. That has not put the world of religion in a tailspin. You can bet your boots that they would be singing different tunes if some sort of positive sorrelation was discovered.
