Americans Stuck in Yemen File Suit Against Govt | Al Jazeera America

Hundreds of American citizens trapped in Yemen’s roiling violence have a legal right to be evacuated by the U.S. government, advocacy groups argued in a lawsuit filed Thursday that challenges the State and Defense departments' perceived inaction on a constitutional basis.

In court documents that name Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Ashton Carter as defendants, U.S.-based lawyers acting on behalf of 41 American citizens or permanent U.S. residents stuck in Yemen described Washington's decision not to provide any flights or ships out of the conflict zone as "arbitrary" and even illegal. The plaintiffs say they are in grave danger from the escalating violence but have received little more from the State Department than emails or calls about possible third-party flights out of the country and recommendations that they take shelter.........
I'm all for personal responsibility and it's not like the writing hasn't been on the wall for some time but it is what it is: US citizens apparently abandoned by their govt.

I find it hard to believe these people didn't get the word back in September to GTFO of Yemen. I also find it simply stupid of them to ignore the notice given in February that said:

" U.S. citizens remaining in Yemen despite this Travel Warning should limit nonessential travel within the country, make their own contingency emergency plans, enroll their presence in Yemen through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)"

They told these people 6 months ago and again 6 weeks ago...they offered them help. This is just some BS propaganda.

More importantly, India offered evacuation for any US citizens, and the US embassy issued an appropriate travel warning pointing people towards that.

Does the US charge evacuated citizens for military evacuation?
(Germany does - although it won't do one here, since as the most recent travel warning states: "we told you to get out. the embassy is closed.")

Lots of "coulda got out but..." stories here.

        They were warned repeatedly.

The military is there to defend our nation...not to save dumbasses who want o make a buck.

        Too bad.

If these people had been sent to Yemen by the US government I would agree that the US has a responsibility to evacuate them. For private US citizens who decided to ignore the last 6 months of warnings and evac options I have less sympathy.

The last thing we need is for idiots to start going to Syria to try to score an interview with Assad, or Baghdadi and then expecting the USMC to come riding to the rescue when they get paraded in front of a camera to die.

Some of them are Yemeni Americans. They were there to visit family and friends. That's why they ignored the warning.

Of course that does not entitle them to military escort to get their asses out of a jam. The disclaimer is on the package. You bought it. You figure it out.

There should be emigration control for going to countries with a travel advisory in force.

How you plan to implement this?

If they have US passports, then they can leave through the Saudi/ Omani border. But they better not flaunt their US citizenship or the Houthis or the AQ will charge them as spies and behead them.

                  Cheers!...on the rocks!!

It's beyond me how can the Government restrict me where to go. Freedom of movement or something?

If I go into troubles and yell "Mother", well, too bad for me.

Requiring an exit visa to leave the US if you're travelling to a country with a travel advisory. It's not unprecedented or impossible.
