  • Preliminary NASA Test Results: MACH/EM (reactionless) drives generate thrust.

Reports from NASA's Eagleworks Unit indicate that a number of test runs on various MACH & EM rigs do appear to generate significant measurable thrust - to the point were they may be several times more efficient than the best current ion drives.

    Quoting from the article:

" Based on test data and theoretical model development, the expected thrust to power for initial flight applications is expected to be in the 0.4 newton per kilowatt electric (N/kWe) range, which is about seven times higher than the current state of the art Hall thruster in use on orbit today."

    Here is the link. http://http://nextbigfuture.com/2015/02/more-emdrive-experiment-information.html

Very exciting if further testing confirms the results. Wish Minskaya was with us to help interpret the results. Still miss her.

Fantastic if true, I can only find one source so will hold off dancing, but again fantastic if true :)

Further to the above and from SPACE DAILY:

NASA CONFIRMS EM (reaction-less) DRIVE PRODUCES THRUST IN A VACUUM!

      http://http://www.spacedaily.com/rep...acuum_999.html

There is a long way to go yet of course and other labs will have to reproduce the results but if they do the next step would be testing a small EM drive rig in space. If it works.....

The link and edit isn't working so just google space daily!

Reminds me of the faster than light neutrinos from a few years back. I think we need to wait for peer review and replication of their experiments on this one.

This is already being organised. Other labs are being sent EM modules in the near future. But this is the 2nd series of tests that have come in with positive results (the first run was not in a vacuum chamber) so here's hoping!

But if one could really do either of these things why don't we see alien space ships?

Hmm, on the one hand, no alien space ships visible anywhere. On the other hand, we see plenty of ginormous explosions and high energy events in the universe, some unexplained. Two sets of events could be explained if alien civilizations always blow themselves up whenever they try to travel faster than the speed of light. In that case .

Firstly even if this does work and turns out to be a practical space drive there is nothing to say it will be a practical alternatives for interstellar travel - at least across the thousands of LY that we think separate us from other civilizations.

Secondly as per the article Earth to Mars in 70 days is hardly 'warp' speed.

Lastly, many scientists speculate that we are alone in the Galaxy if not the Universe due to the highly unlikely nature of Eukaryotic cells (us and all advanced plants and animals). The argue that the Earth may well be an island of biological complexity in a Galaxy of bacteria/pond scum.

Well, that's both depressing and reassuring at the same time.

Although this doesn't sound very promising:

Read the article on the link. All true. That said and in fairness to the Eagle Works labs:

                    1) They themselves haven't publicly claimed the discovery of any revolutionary propulsion systems, just a series of anomalous results which point to possibility such a thing;
                    2) They are planning to see if other labs can independently duplicate their results by sending them EM rigs as soon as they have built them; and
                    3) As the author of your article pointed out they are working on a shoestring budget so its a bit of a circular argument to criticize them for insufficient testing and a failure to publish when no reputable journal will publish until multiple independent tests are completed and at least some if not all of their claims are verified.

So its a watch this space (non pun intended ) situation.

Just to clarify one thing: Wired calls it NASA's Warp Drive. It isn't. NASA is separately working on a warp drive; one works on bending space, the other is using radiation pressure in a quantum vacuum. The connection is that it's the same team working on it - and that they recently supposedly used the emDrive in a warp-field experiment.

Probably the best explanation on the emDrive is the following reddit entry btw:

German researchers eliminate some potential 'noise scources'. Thrust still present.

See attached link from a German team who attempted to eliminate some of the potential sources of error sighted by critics of Eagleworks current experiments with EM rigs. Apparently after eliminating the variables in question they still detected measurable thrust within the (albeit limited) range previously reported. Other info is also included - so the testing goes on. Fingers crossed.
