Since last week's tit for tat exchange between the Israelis and Hezbollah, neither side seems to have the stomach to go another round and are trying to de-escalate. It still begs the question why did the strike that killed an Iranian general and six Hezbollah happen at all? Was it a targeted assassination? Retaliation from the Hezbollah side killed two Israeli soldiers and a Spanish citizen, were their lives a reasonable price to pay for a hit on a general? Israel tries to sell itself as a stabilizing force in the Middle East but incidents like this, the Dubai job and hits on Iranian scientists suggest the behavior of a rogue state.
