  • EU parliament is a circus

Tankie, Snapper, someone in Germany agrees with you.

No such thing as a good tax - Churchill

To make mistakes is human. To blame someone else for your mistake, is strategic.

They probably wouldn't like her anti-UKIP rant from two weeks ago though.

Please tell me her editor and the editor in chief are also pro-UKIP.

Latest piece of madness is due to the new 'GDP calculations' which include drugs and prostitution part of GDP. Since there are no tax receipts for these things it involves 'guesstimating' the size of these sectors in each country and then including with the GDP - which then ceases to be a 'calculation' in the truest sense since part of it is a guesstimate.

So somewhere in the Tower of Babel that is the EU the calculators have been out, the guesses made and applied and then it was decided to project these guesstimates retrospectively, perhaps because although the Council of Ministers wanted a reduced EU budget the Commission and the 'yes men' of the rubber stamping 'Parliament' voted to increase the budget. So the UK get's handed a retrospective bill or 'surcharge' of £1.7bn, Greece and Cyprus also have pay up for more while Germany and France get 'rebates'... Of course it's not as if the income generated in the 'black economy' enters the Government books - except at second hand - the drug dealer buys a beer and pays tax on the beer etc... so the whole farce amounts to just raising additional money.

Why wouldn't prostitution be included in GDP? And at least over here it's taxed. The federal auditing guys always admonish that technically they'd need to get VAT off prostitution too. It's not like it changes the membership contributions though, since it's included for everyone. Unless you think your island is a giant cesspit filled with drugs and hookers. And it doesn't really change the GDP by any real margin. The German BIP increase due to the inclusion is somewhere around 0.25%. The only real effect the inclusion has is that the debt quota is lowered.

As for the rebate, you - and the other countries with a "surcharge" - got out of the financial crisis okay. The financial crisis is over, now it's time to pay us back. That goes twice for Greece. And the UK? Yeah, i know, you guys don't actually have any industry creating your GDP. You have The City, your capitalist heaven. Every red cent The City takes in is taken out of the backs of European workers. *ahem*
