  • Is it NATO's policy to defend Finland from Russian invasion, then or now?

Obviously none of the Warsaw Pact states were covered. The question here is whether the invasion of either Finland and Sweden would have drawn a NATO response.

both Finland and Sweden are considering 3 different models - 2 are subsets of NATO, the 3rd is NATO embed - that should indicate mindset on their side. There is potentially a 4th option for Finland (JEF)

The Finns russian border is greater than the combined length of all other neighbouring baltic/nordic borders combined

        Balkan neighbors of Finland?

I'm unsure what NATO's policy is regarding protecting Finland but I'm not sure that even Putin is willing to test and find out. While Finland remains outside NATO, an attack would be viewed by most as a direct attack on the heart of Western democratic civilization and its economy.

The Finnish government wants to move toward closer ties with NATO but that view does not seem to be shared by most of the population (only 25% want NATO membership). Finland has economic concerns, among them Russian tourists to their country. While NATO membership may be the prudent option for Finland there is the risk of offending the voters at home.
