  • HMS Illustrious Retired

The Royal Navy just retired her last Harrier Carrier. But its not a big deal since they had no aircraft for the last 3 years.

No replacement till at least 2020.

    UK's last Invincible-class carrier decommissioned - IHS Jane's 360
HMS Illustrious , the last of the UK Royal Navy's Invincible-class aircraft carriers, was decommissioned on 28 August in Portsmouth.

The decommissioning means that the newly refitted helicopter carrier HMS Ocean will be the RN's sole dedicated flat-top until the entry into service of the new Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier in 2017.

HMS Illustrious , launched in 1978, was the second of three 20,000 tonne Invincible-class aircraft carriers and saw service supporting UK military action in Bosnia and Sierra Leone. Following the UK Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) of 2010, HMS Illustrious has operated solely as a helicopter carrier after its Harrier air wing was retired from service.

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is looking to sell the aircraft carrier to parties interested in preserving the vessel in the UK.

The Royal Navy plans to get by with the slower HMS Ocean as their helicopter carrier, till the QE comes online.
