FLIR Systems now sells a real FLIR for the iPhone

FLIR ONE™ personal thermal imager by FLIRŪ - See the Heat°

    $349 + Tax.

Wasn't it just a few years ago that these things cost $20K, came with a liquid nitrogen bottle and an export control license?

"Few years ago" is the lifespan for some nerds.

Well obviously its for anyone wanting to make sure they don't have any of these things hiding in their basement. I can't think of any other practical use.

one of my more enjoyable contracts was evaluating FLIR hot sensing systems (as opposed to cold sensors)

picking out peoples clothes at 11km in the dark makes you feel like a voyeur...

we were isolating kangaroos in the middle of a forest at 6km

FLIR + thermographic sensors = uncomfortable sniper

Ye're but this gizmo wouldn't pick out 'Skippy' if he was grazing on your front lawn! I doubt it would pick up a human heat signature on a cold night at more than say 15-20 metres.

Flir is actually really useful for home maintenance purposes. A lot of repairmen in the US use the professional flir models to look for leaks, insulation losses, etc:

In thermal sensor tech like FLIR, the hot and cold description refers to the cooling system used to "assist" the imager - it doesn't refer to hot or cold weather (or how the target radiates). All of their top end military systems are "cold" systems

the one described here would be a "hot" system. they can still be effective though. I've assessed hot systems that had a multiple km range and were discriminatry enough to be used to assist targeting
