IS-3 fights after being monument for 69 years....

Around few weeks back there were reports that South-Eastern rebels took an IS-3 tank to major repair after it stayed 69 years as a war monument. Nobody then expected that this relict would ever be brought to a fight. Indeed this could only be a weapon of last resort for poorly armed rebels who lack means to fight waves of heavy armor of Ukrainian troops.

Yet recent news was that Is-3 was recently used by rebels at Slayansk against fortified checkpoint of Ukrainian Army. Looks like attack was successful and the old tank survived it.

It would be funny if not the fact that soldiers died on both sides during the attack. And looks like there would be more people dying there before civil war ends in South-Eastern Ukraine.

Fascinating...and the IS-3 has always been one of my favorite tanks, a low-slung pike-nosed brute.

The fact that they were able to overhaul an engine that has been stone cold for 69 years, to running order is incredible. I'd love to hear how it was done.

Substituted? Ukraine has literally thousands of older tanks and tank engines in numerous depots. The ones above are in the Kharkiv region.

    Holy shit snacks!

Even swapping out engines, that's a pretty big job. And there would still be a lot of systems on that IS-3 that haven't budged in some of our parent's lifetimes.

IIRC it is the biggest tank graveyard in Europe. What amazes is me is they never scrapped them and built something out of all that iron.

I was surfing today to read more about that attack. Looks like the main gun is not working yet - they used the tank as a heavy armored APC + installed heavy MG on the turret. The repair team is trying to recover main gun as well (adjusting its locking system to ammunition from D-30 artillery cannon). If they do that they IS3 would be firing amunition from D-30 cannon.....

It has a 122mm gun on it, could still do some serious damage if they can get the gun in working shape (I am guessing finding the ammunition won't be easy either).
