  • Tony Gywnn passes away at 54

Was really surprised about this tonight. I am an SDSU alumni and left the school in 1977 when he started. My second team, after the N.Y. Yankees, is the San Diego Padres ever since their first pro game where I caught a foul ball. He then went back to SDSU after leaving the pros. Ironic since today one of my patients was in who I have seen since 1984 and played a few years with the Yankees. We talked about the past weekend with the team in town and Jeter retiring. Talked about the many Yankee players now on the Giants staff. That led to the Padres and comparing Jeter with Gwynn a little, both class guys, and what he thought of him. Little did we know he died from cancer of the salivary glands earlier. Always liked the picture in the second link showing two close friends, San Diegans, who knew hitting like none other.
