Israel launches massive search for three youths feared kidnapped in West Bank

Police along with Shin Bet, IDF scanning vicinity near West Bank city for youths missing since late Thursday; families say they have no reason to believe the boys decided to leave home on their own.

Security forces fear three teenage yeshiva boys, all 16 years of age, were kidnapped in the West Bank after they went missing from a hitchhiking spot in the Gush Etzion area Thursday night.

The youths, all of whom are yeshiva students, went missing during the course of Thursday night and security forces are conducting sweeping searches of the area.

Israel says it holds the Palestinian Authority responsible for the well-being of the missing youths.

The army said on Friday that it was seeking intelligence leads that could shed light on the fate of the missing youths. The IDF said that it was holding routine situational assessments with other security arms in order to ascertain the whereabouts of the missing yeshiva students.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been briefed on the latest developments of the search. Netanyahu has convened an emergency security cabinet session with his top defense chiefs at the Kirya Defense Ministry compound in Tel Aviv.

While they do strongly fear the boys were kidnapped, security forces have not yet been able to rule out all other possibilities police said.

According to reports, the IDF and the Shin Bet security service are in touch with their counterparts in the Palestinian Authority security apparatus in an effort to advance the search.

A torched car that was found alongside a highway in the vicinity of the search. Investigators towed away the car and will begin examining the remains in an effort to determine whether there is any connection to the missing students search.

Police were in touch with the families and said that they have no reason to believe that the teenagers decided to go missing on their own, or run away from home or their yeshiva.

Palestinian media on Friday reported that a large number of Israeli forces had been deployed to the Hebron vicinity in search of the boys who went missing earlier in the morning.

Palestinian news agency Ma'an cited sources in the vicinity as saying Israeli forces had raided various home in the city of Dura, located southwest of Hebron, in search of the missing boys.
This event is still unfolding, and IDF soldiers and police are currently narrowing their search on the Hebron region. This immediately brings up the story of Nachson Wachsman, which also occurred on a Friday and unfortunately ended in tragedy, as well as that of Gilad Shalit. We can only hope that the boys will be found soon and brought home safely.

Dawlat al-Islam (which is linked to ISIS) has claimed responsibility via a pamphlet released in Hebron.

A large number of Israeli security and military forces are conducting intensive sweeps in the city of Hebron and in the villages of Tufah, Bnei Naim, Yata, Halhul, Beit Ayoun, and Doura. It is felt that the ISIS aligned Dawlat al-Islam may attempt to transfer the kidnapped Israeli teenagers to Syria. Jordan has increased security at all border crossings.

I learned in the Yeshiva they learned at, my stepdad and my four step-brothers lived in Alon Shvut, where the Yeshiva is located, and I served in the Gush Etzion region for almost a year and a half when I was in the IDF.

Why were three kids from three different settlements together in Palestinian land? Whats the rest of the story? How did they get out from under the watchful eyes of the IDF?

They weren't in Palestinian land. They were in Gush Etzion, populated by both Israelis and Palestinians. They were kidnapped from a central junction in the region, which is in very close proximity to Alon Shvut (pop. ~3000) and Efrat (pop, ~10,000), as well as many other Jewish settlements. Hitchhiking from that junction is a common practice, and when I was studying in Alon Shvut (before my days in the IDF) I also used to hitchhike from there all the time.

The area is also known to be VERY quiet, relatively, though instances of stone throwing and rioting have been steadily increasing in the region over the past year. However, there is a quantum leap between stone throwing and kidnapping. Because the area is so quiet, and because the idea of kidnapping from that particular place was unthinkable, and because they most likely got into the car willingly and not under duress, there is no real issue here of them "getting out from under the watchful eyes of the IDF". The IDF does not act as a personal bodyguard service for every person beyond the Green Line.

What's the vote for? From where within Israeli controlled territories it is considered ok to abduct teens?

Like Dok said, it's not up to vote, but the Gush Etzion region is mainly Area C, and partially Area B, meaning either areas under Israeli control or under joint Israeli-Palestinian control. Either way, it's illegal (to use the term lightly) to kidnap teenagers and hold them against their will.

It is illegal as long as the teens are Israelis, eh? There have been instances of Palestinians teens held against their will by the Israeli Army in Palestinian lands.

Still Palestinian land, if it was Israeli land the Palestinians would be Israeli Arabs.

                            Thanks that makes more sense.

Maybe not for every person but for enough of them to give that impression.

I hope they come home safe, my gut says they will. Both Israel and Palestine are well versed in tit for tat hostage taking and later exchange. May it be sooner rather than later.
