      As I understand it, Sikh ruler Ranjit Singh took what is now Pakistan, and a chunk of Afghanistan from Zaman Shah Durrani (to whom Karzai is distantly related). In so doing, he established a Sikh Empire that came to grief almost 70 years later, when it took the field against the East India Company.
