the intel teams and advisers from the us and uk are in country
there are no tacticals as the nigerians have publicly rejected the use of foreign tacticals - so far

unsure how long they can maintain that view as its pretty evident that they are lacking in having personnel with the requisite abilities

there are sf from a number of countries already on the african sub-continent or within hours of being able to deploy.

the nigerians basically are a para-military outfit as far as ground capability goes. they have no properly trained CT or SF.

the french have an sf capability and land based strike air already in the region, so they could assist at short notice

the thing holding this back - even with US, UK, French, Chinese offers of direct assistance is not about the ability to turn things around in a meaningful manner (rescue, then kill or capture) but about all countries wanting to assist being handcuffed by sovereign rights issues - and every day that this is the case makes it so much more difficult

unfort some of those girls will never be found - its far too late to even turn their rescue options around

we should care as its 200+ kids, should we care any differently because its 200+ american, UK, chinese, french etc etc... kids?

and I do believe where countries demonstrate an inability to protect the innocent from events such as these that they should be pressured "beyond reason" to let those who are able to do the job to actually do that job

hell we've done it in the past when the country doesn't want to lose face. ie they are flagged in public as "leading the activity" - everyone knows that's for local consumption - but they ultimately have to let armed foreigners in.

if you can't protect the most vulnerable and innocent in your society then you have abrogated your responsibility as a govt to undertake fundamental obligations - at that point, IMO you should stand aside - otherwise you are just compounding the problem further

Am I alone in wondering why the administration felt it imperative to go all Hollywood and announce to the world and to Boko Haram that "we're coming"?
You want to catch these guys off their guard, not drive them (and the girls) deeper underground.

well, the offers of assistance to help rescue went in with no fanfare 3 weeks ago - and as usual, some of the more vocal handwringers then tried to imply that the rest of the world was indifferent as they were black, it was nigerias own fault, they had one eye, were martians etc etc.... ) ie they were different and thus of no interest. despite being palpably wrong that nonsense will still have currency in some countries.

What Hollywood? 18 military personnel, 11 of whom are stationed there permanently anyway, a handful of intelligence experts and negotiators, and Michelle Obama holding a hashtag. That's going Hollywood?

Israel joins search for Nigerian schoolgirls

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by telephone and accepted an offer for assistance in finding the girls, who were kidnapped from their school dormitory in the town of Chibok, Borno state, on April 14.

Jonathan told Netanyahu that “Nigeria would be pleased to have Israel’s globally acknowledged anti-terrorism expertise deployed to support its ongoing operations,” according to the president’s spokesman Reuben Abati.
Britain, the United States and France have already sent specialist teams and equipment to help Nigeria’s military in the search concentrated in the remote northeast, which has been hit by five years of deadly violence.

yeah, sounds great in theory, but if Kruschev offered the 20th Guards to help the Little Rock Nine, pretty sure we'd tell him to Sod off.

Good news, they are still together in one place.

Bad news: converted to Muslim in this context probably means raped and forced into marriage. Many of the girls who are not there in that video, are probably "converted".

Interesting point: why hasn't he sold them as he originally planned? Too difficult to transport or did All Qaeda central's criticism change his plans?

Either way this gives new impetous to rescue efforts.
