"...Khrushchev's banging his shoe on the table at the UN comes to mind...".

Past giving them a pass for doing or saying something the "Russian" way.

"The babushkas know how to deal with the pro-Russian separatists."

The babushkas have gone into hiding.

    That's how the separatists roll...

They made their point...very publicly, meaning threats against them are bound to get plenty of publicity as well... exposing the separatists as inept at PR.

Some might question the morality of slaughtering a civilian ethnic minority but the wisdom of such a plan with 45,000 Russian troops across the eastern border and another 20,000 in Crimea is definitely open to question.

What would help a lot is an economic plan for the eastern region infrastructure improvements, e.g. gas service line where past promises were not kept. The folks there, especially in the rural areas have some legitimate grievances.

Bottom line, however, the region cannot exist as an independent country, and when that starts to sink in, the separatists will find their support dwindling. Indeed, itt doesn't appear the separatists are seriously attempting to establish an independent state but are angling to force Russia to incorporate the area. In that respect they likely will be disappointed because Putin can't afford another annexation, politically or economically.

Maybe Ukraine gov't should throttle back its military ops and wait them out... Perhaps negotiate with them like cops do hostage takers. The separatists are not likely to relinquish control without some 'victories' they can claim for their disruptive efforts. On the other hand, kicking their ass would serve as a lesson to future agitators. Either way, the government needs a plan to improve conditions in the east.
