But according to Wiki at that time Nimitz was en route to western Pacific to provide security during 1988 Saul Olympic games then started sailing toward Persian Gulf on Sept. 2nd 1988.
Cause it's an american carrier, and a famous one at that. Fits the stereotype. Like in the old westerns, in which any one could play an indian or a bad mexican.

In this version, the airliner does a loop, dives in, the pilot opens a window and sinks the carrier with a molotov cocktail.

Wow- Oliver Stone's son, Sean Ali Stone lives in Iran, believes 9/11 was an inside job, trashes "spys" and "collaborators" and America in general and doesn't have a drone assigned to him? :slap:

The conspiracy theory that 9/11 was President George W Bush administration's inside job is alive and well; however, those who believe this hyper speculative theory fall in the minority category. Iran's leaders, at least, the last Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, certainly advocated this as well as denying the Holocaust.

It looks like Iran is planning to blow up their new carrier replica. I'm sure this revelation comes as an unanticipated shock to everyone. ;)

Only one problem. The Iranian airliner was not shot down by a warplane from a CVN. It was shot down by a USN Guided missle cruiser. CG-49 Vincennes.

No worries, they could never build anything even on par with a CVN. And they cant get it from the "usual suspects". They cant even build anything on par either.

Adm. Fadavi said: "We should learn about weaknesses and strengths of our enemy." (from the ABC news article)

How does one learn about fighting an American manned and operated Nimitz class aircraft carrier and it's air wing by attacking a 2/3 size mock up made of barges? It exhibits none of our strengths or weaknesses. And it sure as hell doesn't launch scores of angry heavily armed aircraft to pulverize you or have access to advanced sensors or command and control facilities, or a crew to fight it.
Maybe they are trying to test targeting a carrier sized vessel with some shore based weapon?
Or maybe the "enemy" he refers to is a special effects model building company?

Too bad they want to blow it up, seems like a waste of perfectly good cardboard and plywood. My question is whether the footage from destroying their new toy is going to be used in a propaganda film immediately or if they just want to keep it on hand to pull out in the event of an open conflict with the USA.

Years ago, inaccurately proclaiming great victories as you lose battle after battle may have worked for some countries. I don't foresee Iran being able to hoodwink their population quite so easily with the availability of the internet. Their attempts to block and censor the internet don't seem to have been entirely successful.

Still, I wonder if they may be looking to use it to test a system similar to the Chinese DF-21d that can supposedly target a moving carrier. They "tested" theirs on a carrier mock up in the Gobi Desert. China tests and "sinks' DF-21D missile on mock US aircraft carrier in Gobi desert | GlobalPost
Maybe they want to see if whatever weapon or sensor it is, if it can distinguish a carrier or carrier like object at sea from other ships, or beyond the horizon or with a primitive drone.

Any idea if the target the Chinese shot was evading or at least moving during the test? Seems unlikely that it would be if it was a carrier sized object on land. I have to wonder what sort of guidance system on a ballistic missile moving at hypersonic speeds during reentry can properly identify and track an evading target like a carrier.

No, it was stationary- hence the doubts when the DOD declared it was at IOC. Supposedly China has a set of satellites whose purpose is to provide data for the missile among other things:
                          Yaogan-VII electro-optical satellite - 9 December 2009
                          Yaogan-VIII synthetic aperture radar satellite - 14 December 2009
Yaogan-IX Naval Ocean Surveillance System (NOSS) constellation (3 satellites in formation) - 5 March 2010.[24]
Yaogan-XVI Naval Ocean Surveillance System (NOSS) constellation - 25 November 2012
                          (source- wikipedia, defense news)
They are also developing an over the horizon radar, so I image there will be some sort of midcourse guidance or data sent to each mirv. I don't think it is intended that the warhead has it's own guidance.

Really wouldnt make any difference considering the birds the US has outside of its own "space planes". Their sats wont be of much use.

True, and the hope would be that we could deny them the use of those satellites. But you would have to be careful of the kessler syndrome in which we'd end up hurting our own ability to use near space as well if we start taking out satellites. Maybe the USAF X-37's could grab the chinese satellites or push them out of orbit. I'm sure there are other ways to defeat the missile's guidance or interfering with the data coming from the satellites too. As well as being able to shoot down the missiles with SM-3's. I'll take our chances any day.

They could round up 4,500 random people, put them on it, and tow it out into the middle of the ocean for nine months. That might give them some insights. Bonus points for veracity if you feed them nothing but reheated frozen food and make them all stop whatever they're doing and clean it for an hour every day.
