  • Venice (Veneto) Referendum 2014(March 16) Independence and Sovereign

Venice will vote weather or not to become an independent and sovereign republic as it once was.
    From March 16th to 21st.

The question that will be put to all citizens of the Veneto residents with voting rights will be as follows: "DO YOU WANT TO BECOME A VENETO THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF INDEPENDENT AND SOVEREIGN?".

Every citizen can vote with a Yes or a No.

For this reason, it now stands in front of the Venetian us an extraordinary opportunity, a train that must be seized before they start again from the station's history. 2014 is the new 1848 which will create a new Europe, starting from the Veneto region and will include other regions who are going to stand up in front of the other states of the world: Catalonia, Scotland, Flanders and we all hope even Sardinia, Sicily , England and all other regions of the peninsula that once free from the shackles of less free among the states of the Western world will be able to give life to a new renaissance economic, cultural and civic life.
I don't know if it happens but several economic outcomes that are very interesting if it does.

First it would most likely be outside the EU but most likely Euros would be the monetary unit.
However they could bring back the Venetian Lira. It is theoretically possible that they could adopt that currency by simply equating it to the euro and transferring purchasing power into the currency making it viable.
There would be many disadvantages on leaving and many advantages. Even if they get their proportion of Italian debt their overhead could be significantly lower simply because they wouldn't have to pay for at least two more levels of bureaucracy (EU and Federal) since State would become Federal and locales would be as they are.

yes I found eventually that it is a 'consultative' referendum

The reality is they could get autonomy and eventually go for full sovereignty.
But wouldn't it be interesting if the Venetian Republic existed again?

There are very interesting reasons why Italy would find it advantageous. Venice could provide and "out" of the Euro via the Venetian Lira in some sense. It would provide impetus for deep reform both tax-wise and structure wise, perhaps something closer to Swiss or even confederation style. Corruption could be easier to root out with less levels of gov't and more direct local control it would seem. Etc.

    found this interesting

I'm much happier dealing with Quebec. It seems so much more simple than the giant clusterfuck Europe is.

Over 89 percent of residents in Italy's Veneto region have voted in an unofficial referendum in favor of independence from the rest of the country as Venetians seek to restore the glory of the old days by creating a state of their own.

Over two million residents of Veneto – the region of Italy surrounding Venice – took part in the so-called 'Veneto independence referendum' that lasted from Sunday to Friday. The survey, conducted online and backed by the region’s independence parties, has no legal power but aims to gather support for a bill calling for a referendum.

The poll also asked residents if they want the region to keep the euro and remain part of the European Union and NATO if it declares its independence. More than 55 percent of voters said they would prefer an independent Veneto to remain part of the EU, and over 51 percent said they want to remain in the eurozone. Over 64.5 percent said they want Veneto to be part of NATO.
Doubt they let it go but it is possible.

89% of participants in the survey, not 89% of residents. After journalists proved it was fairly easy to cheat the platform used into giving them multiple votes.

In over a decade, meeting various Italians on various positions, I have not met a single person who thinks otherwise.

89% Of Venetians Vote For Independence From Italy, Will Withhold Taxes To Rome | Zero Hedge
As The Daily Mail reports, the proposed ‘Repubblica Veneta’ includes the five million inhabitants of the Veneto region and has been largely driven by the wealthy 'who are tired of supporting the poor and crime-ridden south' (Venice pays EUR71bn in taxes and receives only EUR21bn in services and investment). The ballot appointed a committee of ten who immediately declared independence from Italy. Venice may now start withholding taxes from Rome.
