Well, as another member of the Commonwealth, though equally clueless, I must admit I had to Google for pome and discovered it was actually an acronym. As a happy add-on, got to learn where the term pommie came from as well.

Ok, now this is a really interesting piece of info:

Malaysia air probe finds scant evidence of attack: sources | Reuters

Also raising doubts about the possibility of an attack, the United States extensively reviewed imagery taken by spy satellites for evidence of a mid-air explosion, but saw none, a U.S. government source said. The source described U.S. satellite coverage of the region as thorough.

        Tankie your great :tankie:
No 'cat fight' here tbm3fan, just someone who thinks it appropriate to pursue some sad vendetta over the bodies of 239 people.

When I got to work today I discovered that a girl who works in my office has a close family member on the plane. Her father died a week ago. She is one of the sweetest people I have ever met, and though we aren't friends, I feel for her. I also feel a greater connection to this than I did yesterday. Like everybody else here (I assume), I just want to find out what happened & give the families what small measure of peace they can now derive from this tragedy.

I don't know why Tankie feels this is the appropriate place to air his grievances, real or imagined, with me. I don't know why he feels the need to drag such sad events into a fight that only he is interested in having. Don't encourage him. He can pick his fights anywhere he chooses. This is the poorest imaginable place.

Everything we learn just seems to deepen the mystery. Lets hope they can find the flight data recorder soon, especially if there is some issue with the 777. The way Malaysian authorities have handled this is going to come under close scrutiny.

In the meantime more info on the fake passports. Increasingly looks like it is a dead end & that Z picked it on page one - asylum seekers. There are pictures at the link showing the two guys.

Kuala Lumpur: A catastrophic mid-air explosion caused either by a bomb in the cargo hold or a highly unusual technical fault is likely to have led to the sudden disappearance of flight MH370 with 239 people on board, Malaysian authorities suspect, and that the men travelling on stolen passports were more likely asylum seekers travelling from Iran to Europe.

Police identified one of the passengers of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane on a stolen passport as a 19-year-old Iranian seeking to migrant to Germany.

Police said Pouria Nour Mohammad Mehrdad was expecting to meet his mother in Frankfurt who knew he was travelling on a stolen passport.

Malaysian police Inspector General Kalid Abu Bakar told reporters investigations had shown Mr Poruia has no known links to terrorist organisations.

He the man was “unlikely” to be involved in the plane’s disappearance.

Inspector Kalid said police are focusing their investigations into the possibility the plane was sabotaged, hijacked or there were mental or personality problems with any of the passengers and crew.

He said police are also looking into the possibility that a bomb was smuggled into the cargo hold of the Boeing 777 that was en-route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it vanished early in the dark hours of early last Saturday morning.

“We are looking at all areas,” he said.

Inspector Kalid said another man travelling on a stolen passport who boarded the flight has yet to be identified.

The man is also believed to have been seeking to migrant to Europe.

Police have also discounted an earlier announcement by authorities in Kuala Lumpur that five passengers booked in for the flight but failed to turn-up at the departure and had their luggage removed from the plane.

“All of the passengers who booked the flight boarded the flight,” Inspector Kalid said.

As authorities expanded their search to remote parts of mainland Malaysia – and as China deployed 10 satellites to help – the inability to find concentrated debris from the jet four days after it vanished led the authorities to believe it exploded in mid-flight.

However, they have not ruled out any of a number of possibilities, including a hijacking that led to an explosion on board.

“We are not hiding anything; we don’t have an explanation at this stage,” an official in Kuala Lumpur said.

Authorities ordered a doubling of the search area to more than 100 nautical miles because “we don’t want to leave anything to guesswork”, said Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, the head of Malaysia’s Civil Aviation department, who is in charge of the search.

The Boeing 777’s pilots made no distress call, adding weight to the sudden explosion theory, whether it was accidental or an act of terrorism.

Reuters quoted US and European government sources as saying Malaysian investigators had voiced scepticism about a terrorist attack.

The People’s Liberation Daily said the 10 Chinese satellites would use high-resolution earth imaging capabilities, visible light imaging and other technologies to ‘‘support and assist in the search and rescue operations for the Malaysia Airlines aircraft’’.

Malaysian authorities admit they are no closer to locating the plane than they were when it abruptly disappeared from radar 120 nautical miles off the Malaysian coast near the town of Kota Bharu in the early hours of Saturday. For the past four days they have been directing 34 aircraft and 46 ships from 10 countries to chase what turned out to be false leads. They included logs tied together being mistaken for a life raft.

Two RAAF search aircraft are among the planes criss-crossing the South China Sea, Gulf of Thailand and Malacca Strait for signs of the plane.

The United States has reviewed spy satellite imagery for evidence of a mid-air explosion but found none, deepening the mystery.

The aircraft was equipped with a maintenance computer capable of talking to the ground automatically through a short message system known as ACARS. But the system recorded no signals from the time the aircraft disappeared from radar.

There are some astonishing things you’re not being told about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the flight that simply vanished over the Gulf of Thailand with 239 people on board.
The mystery of the flight’s sudden and complete disappearance has even the world’s top air safety authorities baffled. “Air-safety and antiterror authorities on two continents appeared equally stumped about what direction the probe should take,” reports the Wall Street Journal.
                WSJ goes on to report:
“For now, it seems simply inexplicable,” said Paul Hayes, director of safety and insurance at Ascend Worldwide, a British advisory and aviation data firm.
While investigators are baffled, the mainstream media isn’t telling you the whole story, either. So I’ve assembled this collection of facts that should raise serious questions in the minds of anyone following this situation.
                • Fact #1: All Boeing 777 commercial jets are equipped with black box recorders that can survive any on-board explosion
No explosion from the plane itself can destroy the black box recorders. They are bomb-proof structures that hold digital recordings of cockpit conversations as well as detailed flight data and control surface data.
                • Fact #2: All black box recorders transmit locator signals for at least 30 days after falling into the ocean
Yet the black box from this particular incident hasn’t been detected at all. That’s why investigators are having such trouble finding it. Normally, they only need to “home in” on the black box transmitter signal. But in this case, the absence of a signal means the black box itself — an object designed to survive powerful explosions — has either vanished, malfunctioned or been obliterated by some powerful force beyond the worst fears of aircraft design engineers.
                • Fact #3: Many parts of destroyed aircraft are naturally bouyant and will float in water
In past cases of aircraft destroyed over the ocean or crashing into the ocean, debris has always been spotted floating on the surface of the water. That’s because — as you may recall from the safety briefing you’ve learned to ignore — “your seat cushion may be used as a flotation device.”
Yes, seat cushions float. So do many other non-metallic aircraft parts. If Flight 370 was brought down by an explosion of some sort, there would be massive debris floating on the ocean, and that debris would not be difficult to spot. The fact that it has not yet been spotted only adds to the mystery of how Flight 370 appears to have literally vanished from the face of the Earth.
                • Fact #4: If a missile destroyed Flight 370, the missile would have left a radar signature
One theory currently circulating on the ‘net is that a missile brought down the airliner, somehow blasting the aircraft and all its contents to “smithereens” — which means very tiny pieces of matter that are undetectable as debris.
The problem with this theory is that there exists no known ground-to-air or air-to-air missile with such a capability. All known missiles generate tremendous debris when they explode on target. Both the missile and the debris produce very large radar signatures which would be easily visible to both military vessels and air traffic authorities.
                • Fact #5: The location of the aircraft when it vanished is not a mystery
Air traffic controllers have full details of almost exactly where the aircraft was at the moment it vanished. They know the location, elevation and airspeed — three pieces of information which can readily be used to estimate the likely location of debris.
Remember: air safety investigators are not stupid people. They’ve seen mid-air explosions before, and they know how debris falls. There is already a substantial data set of airline explosions and crashes from which investigators can make well-educated guesses about where debris should be found. And yet, even armed with all this experience and information, they remain totally baffled on what happened to Flight 370.
                • Fact #6: If Flight 370 was hijacked, it would not have vanished from radar
Hijacking an airplane does not cause it to simply vanish from radar. Even if transponders are disabled on the aircraft, ground radar can still readily track the location of the aircraft using so-called “passive” radar (classic ground-based radar systems that emit a signal and monitor its reflection).
Thus, the theory that the flight was hijacked makes no sense whatsoever. When planes are hijacked, they do not magically vanish from radar.
Conclusion: Flight 370 did not explode; it vanished
The inescapable conclusion from what we know so far is that Flight 370 seems to have utterly and inexplicably vanished. It clearly was not hijacked (unless there is a cover-up regarding the radar data), and we can all be increasingly confident by the hour that this was not a mid-air explosion (unless debris suddenly turns up that they’ve somehow missed all along).
The inescapable conclusion is that Flight 370 simply vanished in some way that we do not yet understand. This is what is currently giving rise to all sorts of bizarre-sounding theories across the ‘net, including discussions of possible secret military weapons tests, Bermuda Triangle-like ripples in the fabric of spacetime, and even conjecture that non-terrestrial (alien) technology may have teleported the plane away.
Personally, I’m not buying any of that without a lot more evidence. The most likely explanation so far is that the debris simply hasn’t been found yet because it fell over an area which is somehow outside the search zone. But as each day goes by, even this explanation becomes harder and harder to swallow.
The frightening part about all this is not that we will find the debris of Flight 370; but rather that we won’t. If we never find the debris, it means some entirely new, mysterious and powerful force is at work on our planet which can pluck airplanes out of the sky without leaving behind even a shred of evidence.
If there does exist a weapon with such capabilities, whoever control it already has the ability to dominate all of Earth’s nations with a fearsome military weapon of unimaginable power. That thought is a lot more scary than the idea of an aircraft suffering a fatal mechanical failure.

Please tell me that the WSJ DID NOT publish those six points and that conclusion above.

Over 50ish years, I've read, heard enough navigational errors from sophisticated equipment to know that to put absolute faith in that equipment, that it is faultless in all events, is foolhardy at the best.

In "Dark Waters", since their Nav Officer didn't set their LORAN to the right frequencies, a Skate class sub was getting readings they were in Mongolia and not off a Soviet port.

One of the great mysteries for decades was because the pilot mistook his position, reported it, crashed, and the search teams were searching in the wrong area.

We've had blocked static ports, misprogramed computers, people turning off their computers and not knowing it, and who knows what else.

So you will excuse me if I am no where near ready to accept that the plane was flattened by the hand of a God.

Does anyone remember that zombie plane incident from a few years ago where the plane continued flying a long distance after the crew and all passengers had become incapacitated? Maybe something like that happened here. The palne's cabin depressurized or life support was lost in some other catastrophic manner. The crew tried to turn around but was incapacitated before they can send a distress call, and it flew a long ways off course before crashing.

ANOTHER weird fact: the IFF transponder (or whatever it is on airlines) stopped functioning at the EXACT instant that the plane disappeared from radar. Coincidence? I think not . . . . .

Helios Airways Flight 522, Athens, Greece, 14 Aug 2005.

Actually, reading this list of Notable decompression accidents and incidents shows how things can go really bad, really quick without the outside world finding out about it.

And then there is this one, China Airlines Flight 611. Broke up at 35K feet. Wreckage was found rather quickly but items in the cabin were found up to 80 miles way from the crash site.

Not too surprising. That's Robert Ballard's chaff theory for deep ocean searching. The heavy stuff falls basically straight down, the lighter stuff spreads out on the currents and impacts below in a spread out, fan pattern. The debris field.

I'm much more willing to use cases like this as a way to proceed than some guess of the occult.
