US forces kill 32 Taliban in Kandahar, retake district

    * Afghan killed, driver wounded in attack on electoral vehicle
    * Three US troops and an Afghan soldier wounded in bomb blasts

KANDAHAR: Hundreds of Afghan police, backed by US air strikes, retook control of a district capital that was overrun by the Taliban last week, killing 32 fleeing guerrillas and capturing at least 15, police said.

The Taliban insurgents took Mian Nishin district of Kandahar province last week, capturing 30 police officers and a district chief in an embarrassment to the provincial government.

They executed eight policemen, including the district police chief, before announcing the release of the remaining 23 people. Before dawn on Tuesday, about 400 police officers advanced on the district capital and the guerrillas fled, said Salim Khan, the deputy provincial police chief.

“We chased the Taliban to an area 10 km north,” he told Reuters. “We found them in a village called Murghai and as a result of the clashes there, 11 Taliban were killed and 15 suspects were arrested.”

Khan said the 11 were killed by the police, while another 21 who had taken refuge in a nearby village were killed by US air strikes to support the operation. He gave no details on whether there were government casualties. A spokesman for the US military said he had no immediate information on the operation.

Meanwhile, suspected Taliban rebels attacked a vehicle in Maiwand district of Kandahar province on Tuesday, killing the husband of a woman working on the country’s upcoming legislative polls, and injuring the driver. The incident was the second fatal attack this month linked to September’s parliamentary vote. agencies

It shows that inspite of terrorist operating in Kandahar, adjacent to NWFP, their writ is slowly waning.

    A good sign indeed.

What made the Taliban think they can assault and hold a district against such odds? Or is it more symbolic to show the world that they are still a threat?

Kandahar was the real seat of power of the Taliban back in their prime. So them mounting actions there is not terribly shocking.

Taking it back for a short time can be seen as them showing they are still a force to be dealt with and still active fighting the "Kafirs"...

Remember that even during the Soviet Afghan war the Mujahideen would mount attacks on cities and towns and even hold some for short periods.

Kandahar is close to the border and hence they are in a position to mount offensive there and in problem return to the sanctuaries across the border.

Even so, the time is coming when they will be sorted out.

Pakistan has to cooperate more or else it will be a mug's game.

Pakistani army spokesman Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan said the U.S.-led troops had violated the country's territorial jurisdiction and fired several shells, which had hit near Lawara Mandai. Sultan said the coalition commanders on the Afghan side of the border had informed their Pakistani counterparts about the operation in the area.

          Hundred More dead Bastards

Taliban death toll tops 100 in latest battle

Afghanistan's defence ministry spokesman says more than 100 Taliban rebels have been killed in a battle which has raged in the country's south since Tuesday.

It is one of the largest single battles waged in Afghanistan since the Taliban regime was toppled in late 2001.

Now entering its fourth day, Afghanistan's defence ministry has announced that the number of Taliban dead has reached 132.

There are also reports that two senior Taliban commanders, who are said to be close to the Taliban's elusive leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, have been surrounded.

Hundreds of Afghan army troops have been fighting in Zabul province since Tuesday with the support of the US-led coalition in Afghanistan.

Interior Ministry spokesman Lutfullah Mashal said that most of the Taliban casualties are the result of fire from helicopter gunships.

The Taliban have denied losing a single fighter.
