    • I was flipping through channels sunday night and caught a segment of Huckabee. He had a retired military (navy) on to tell us how this defense cut will gut the US military. I found it funny that they are worried about having only 9 carriers compared to the height of 15 carriers during the 1980s. 9 carriers are still 9 more than the rest of the world combined. French carrier is a "medium" carrier. Chinese carrier doesn't have a catapult. Is the Indian carrier in service yet? The other existing carriers are all around 20k ton class, smaller than our assault carriers, which we have 12, by the way.

US and allies still control the world's oceans. More so than any other time in history. We don't have anything to worry about.

        • Any sign of the fleet yet? Surely Farsnews or Press TV would be promoting their stops at various African ports. This is supposed to be a great display of Iranian naval might. Why announce it & then not tell anybody about it? Have the ships even left port?

          • Here is some speculation (speculation is on my part) on the progress of the Iranian Navy's fleet.
Persian patrol: Iran sends warships to Atlantics ? RT News

As per this and other articles, the Sabalan and the Kharg which Iran is claiming to send to the US are labeled the 29th fleet.
allAfrica.com: Somalia: Iran Navy Thwarts Two Pirates Attacks

According to this story, just out a couple of hours ago, the Iranian 29th fleet just stopped a pirate attack in the Bab-el-Mandeb strait.
Quite a long ways from South Africa or the Atlantic or the US, unless the fleet designation only applies to Iranian ships operating in that area and is not specifically assigned to the Kharg and Sabalan. Anyone know?

I've also looked at the AIS site, while it does list the Kharg (as navy/ aux oiler) it does not list any location or itinerary.
            .

Reposted this from the IDF seizes rockets thread where the conversation started drifting in this direction.

According to this article it is the dreaded Armada that fought off the pirates and it is on its way to the US. It will be docking at an African port shortly. Of course, that may be speculation, but it is the closest to confirmation that we have had. If this is the Great White Fleet redux then it left port a little late. All the announcements about leaving port were 2 weeks ago. Even coal powered ships would have moved faster than that! The fact that there was no great announcement when it left tells me that it was running rather late. Will be interested to see what sort of press the Invasion Force gets as it makes its progress.

Iranian Navy’s 29th Fleet of warships today (Feb. 22) thwarted attacks by pirates on the Red Sea.

Iranian forces saved the vessel, but the pirates escaped after heavy armed clashes lasting several hours, according to Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Navy for Operations Admiral Siavash Jareh in a media release. The pirates commanded seven speed boats.

The cargo vessel was damaged during the skirmish. The maintenance team of the Iranian naval fleet repaired the ship, Jareh said. The 29th Fleet will dock at an African country within the next days.

Iran’s naval forces have increased their presence in international waters, including the Gulf of Aden and Bab el-Mendeb strait to protect naval routes and provide security for trade vessels and oil tankers.

The 29th Fleet, which consists of a Kharg helicopter carrier and Sabalan destroyer, left Iran’s southern port city of Bandar Abbas for the Navy’s first-ever mission in the Atlantic Ocean. The fleet will to travel about 25,000 kilometers during its three-month mission.

Perhaps there was a slight typo on their orders. Maybe they were ordered to patrol of the coast of Atlantis? That might explain their failure to appear off New York City.

                • Dateline Iran:

Iran has decided that the mighty 29th Fleet is needed elsewhere. It didn't actually get any further than Djibouti. Personally I suspect that it was so HUGE that it got stuck trying to get out of the Straits of Hormuz. Even funnier, the even more mighty 30th Flotilla is now going to make the voyage to the Atlantic. Apparently it too is on its way. TREMBLE AMERICA!!!!!!

Just too funny for words and entirely predictable.

Iran does this all the time. These announcements are for domestic consumption only. It might one day send a few ships into the Atlantic, maybe. What is unbackable is that it will recycle this announcement as it has before and a few Americans will jump up & down & imply American weakness is to blame.

I'm betting that those who implied that Obama was somehow to blame for this will give him no credit for 'preventing' it. That sort of bias is always a one way street.

A senior Iranian naval commander was quoted in February as saying that several warships would be sent towards US maritime borders in the Atlantic, although the Pentagon said at the time that it was not concerned and that many countries operated in the ocean's international waters.

On Sunday, Fars quoted navy commander Admiral Habibollah Sayyari as saying: "Due to a change in schedule, the battle Group-29 of the naval forces of the Iranian navy will not head to the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the mission will possibly be given to another group."

He gave no reason for the decision but said warships' missions were likely to change "depending on the situation in the region", such as a rise in piracy in the Gulf of Aden.

"So [the] Group-29, which consists of the Sabalan destroyer, Khark logistics carrier and two helicopters … will not go to the Atlantic Ocean and will return home within days," Sayyari was quoted as saying.

"The Navy's 30th flotilla of warships which will be dispatched in the future will be comprised of the Islamic Republic's Alvand destroyer, Bushehr logistic warship and a helicopter," Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari told FNA on Sunday.

His remarks came after reports said that the mission of Iran's 29th flotilla of warships has changed and it won't be sent to the Atlantic Ocean.

Sayyari confirmed the reports, and said, "The mission of any fleet of warships is specified and they are dispatched to the free waters on the basis of certain plannings."

"But considering the conditions of the region, it's possible that the mission of a flotilla is changed; for instance, if the pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden are intensified, some changes will be made in the mission of the fleets of warships," he added.

Sayyari announced that some changes were made in the 29th flotilla's mission and it is returning to Iran, but did not disclose the cause of the change of plans.

In relevant remarks in February, Sayyari had confirmed the voyage of Iranian warships in the Atlantic Ocean, underlining that Iran is entitled to the right to send its troops to international waters.

“All countries, including Iran, are entitled to the right to be present in the free waters, and we don’t seek to violate any country’s territorial waters,” Sayyari told FNA in Tehran at the time, while participating in the annual rallies to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.

“The Army’s fleet of warships is now in the Gulf of Aden and they are moving towards the Atlantic Ocean,” he added.

Senior Iranian Navy commanders announced in February that the country has sent several fleets of warships to the US maritime borders.

"The Iranian Army's naval fleets have already started their voyage towards the Atlantic Ocean via the waters near South Africa," Commander of Iran's Northern Navy Fleet Admiral Afshin Rezayee Haddad announced.

The admiral, who is also the commander of the Iranian Army's 4th Naval Zone, said, "Iran's military fleet is approaching the United States' maritime borders, and this move has a message."

In September 2012, Sayyari reiterated Iran's plans for sailing off the US coasts to counter the US presence in its waters in the Persian Gulf.

                  • And so ends another chapter in Iran's unwitting effort to surrender its dignity. It is sad to see a great people brought so low by the games its government plays.

                    • As was initially obvious to virtually everyone, by now even the domestic Iranian audience, this was all huff and no puff.

                      • We should just cut to the chase and invite them to visit an American east coast city. See if they'll fish or cut bait.
