  • I think that these "militias" are in fact Russian troops without unit patches/ flags. They act and look too professional to be just part of a militia.

The gunmen at the airports (combat fatigues/no unit insignia) have tentatively been identified as Vnevedomstvenaya Okhrana (kontraktniki - Russian mercenaries) who usually work for the Russian Interior Ministry.

The ones above are indeed. Note the black Russian license plate. However, the ones who initially took over the parliament building were kontraktniki.

Are the Marines of the Russian Navy considered elite?

So how long before they encounter Ukrainian insurgency do you think? I'm not sure what the population of the Crimea is, mostly Russian of course however I'm pretty sure there are others who would not take kindly to the current events.

The Ukraine seemingly have not planned for such eventualities as we see before us. Why would they? They were about to form closer alliances with Russia, why would they expect and plan for Russian conflict? Unless some of their commanders had other thoughts.

Russia clearly have regional hegemony on their minds, not the USSR again, perhaps a new Eastern block alliance like their Customs Union but with aligned military and politics.

Just wait till the Muslims start to get upset about it all. Russia likes the Muslims, they need to placate them as they have rather a lot to deal with already.
