    Israel to be first US ally to get V-22 Osprey....

    Israel will be the first U.S. ally to get the V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, a star of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Thursday night.

    Hagel said in an address to the Anti-Defamation League in New York that delivery would be "expedited," meaning "Israel will get six V-22s out of the next order to go on the assembly line, and they will be compatible with other [Israeli defense] capabilities."

    A senior Pentagon official told NBC News that Israel, facing threats from Iran and Syria and instability in the Sinai peninsula, requested the Ospreys this week.

    The Pentagon agreed to reallocate the next group of aircraft to come off the production line, which had been previously assigned to the Marines, to meet the order, the official said.

    Israel could get the unique aircraft — which takes off and lands like a helicopter but flies like a jet — within as early as two years, and "the Marine Corps will recoup its aircraft at a later date," the official said.

    The announcement comes less than a year after the ADL, one of the nation's leading pro-Israeli activist groups, expressed deep reservations about Hagel's nomination for defense secretary, who as a Republican senator representing Nebraska in 2008 criticized the "Jewish lobby" for "intimidating" U.S. officials.

    In January, as Hagel's nomination was under consideration, ADL National Director Abraham Foxman called his record on Israel "at best disturbing and at worst, very troubling."

    Good news; hopefully, this will open the door for other overseas customers (Australia, India, Japan, South Korea, etc.). I know a lot of countries wait to see who will jump in first with a new weapons system.

    Edit: Will this affect Israel's planned acquisition of the Sikorsky CH-53K?

      What is the cost of this unit compared to other helicopters and what is the range and payload of this compared to other helicopters?

        I'm not an expert, but the range should be greater due to the more efficient flight surfaces (conventional wing vs. rotary wing), but the payload is a lot less than a CH-53/Mi-26 (like, a quarter of that); the payload is probably comparable to a CH-46.

          The other significant way to compare the tilt-rotors to the conventional helicopters is altitude and temperature envelopes.

          It will be interesting to see who wins out in the JMR/FVL competing designs. The Bell V-280 seems to be banking on the high/hot advantages of a tilt-rotor, while being simplified and therefore cheaper and likely more reliable than the V-22.

            Then it is intended for special operations with Israeli AF. They will only need about 10 to 12 of them.

                You've just named two weapon systems that, like the .50 cal HMG, have a near timeless application. No relevancy lost nor projected in either. Thoroughly proven within their niche. Love 'em and pray neither go away anytime soon.

                  One of the only weapons platforms (Spooky and Spectre) left that still utilize the 40mm gun alongside the howitzer etc aboard.

                  IMO, the warthog will never go out of style as long as you have wide open areas and men still fight with guns.

                  The last thing you want to see appear if your on the wrong side because there is literally no match for its firepower. Hopefully the US will not retire it. Just upgrade it.

                    Also, the chances of Israel buying a weapon system that isn't multipurpose is slim. The IDF likes getting the most bang for its buck, and single purpose systems like the A-10 or the AC-130 doesn't provide that bang (although it definitely provides many other bangs)
                    Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

                    Abusing Yellow is meant to be a labor of love, not something you sell to the highest bidder.

                          If the USAF decides to retire the A-10 fleet to meet budgetary targets, Israel could possibly purchase some at a bargain. Our theaters of battle are relatively local and land based. The Warthog is the best CAS platform in the world and can chew up anything on the ground. They are low-maintenance and their design is ingenious. Every JTAC/FAC I've talked to would absolutely love to have Warthog platforms on call.

                            History repeating itself. Likewise, F-35s for all branches, when that is exactly what they have been getting away from ever since doing that with the F-4 in the same era. At least they haven't decided that cannons are no longer necessary on fighters again.

                              Never been a fan of the A-10. Aside from the gun, one that has a limited use on the modern battlefield, it doesn't bring anything special to the game. But it has great press.

                              The Army isn't getting A-10s if the AF finally is allowed to retire them.
